Goethes Tagebücher - authentisches Zeugnis einer lebenslangen Selbstdisziplinierung und weltoffener Umsicht - erstmals in vollständiger, quellengetreuer Wiedergabe und umfassender Kommentierung. Eröffnet wurde eine neue Edition des Goethe- und Schiller-Archivs an der Stiftung Weimarer Klassik. In je zehn Text und Kommentar-Bänden werden Goethes Tagebücher historisch-kritisch herausgegeben und erstmals aus den Quellen vollständig und umfassend kommentiert. Band II, 1 umfasst vor allem die Tagebucheintragungen, die ab 1796 kontinuierlich das Erlebte von Tag zu Tag dokumentiert. Die Aufzeichnungen während der dritten Reise in die Schweiz von Juli bis November 1797 nehmen zwar in ihrer detaillierten Ausführlichkeit den größten Raum in diesem Band ein, aber daneben erhält nun auch die Dokumentation des Arbeitsalltags, der Begegnungen und Gespräche wie der geselligen Kultur im Tagebuch eigenes Gewicht. Die akribisch geführten Tagebuchaufzeichnungen aus der zweiten Hälfte der neunziger Jahre ermöglichen einen Einblick in die entstehungsgeschichtlichen Phasen wichtiger Werke, auch in das produktive und sich wechselseitig befruchtende Nebeneinander ganz verschiedener Werkgruppen. Es ist die Zeit von Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahren, der Übersetzung und Kommentierung von Cellinis Autobiografie, des Versepos Hermann und Dorothea, es ist die Zeit einer intensiven Beschäftigung mit der Farbenlehre sowie Beginn und Ende der zusammen mit Johann Heinrich Meyer produzierten Kunstzeitschrift Propyläen; vor allem aber ist es die Zeit der Wiederaufnahme der Arbeit am Faust. Band II,2 kommentiert diese Tagebuchaufzeichnungen.
