About the Book

Josh Kelly Jr. was the only son of Chiricahua Josh Kelly, Indian Scout, Gunfighter, Gambler, and U.S. Deputy Marshall. He grew up part of his life under the name of Josh Perret because his father was a wanted man by George Hearst and the Pinkerton Detective Agency. When Hearst died and the Pinkertons sent to kill the Kelly family were killed by Kelly, the Ndee Indians, and Buckey O'Neill's deputies it was finally safe for Josh Sr. and his family re-claim their rightful name of Kelly. Josh Jr. was sent to live with the Ndee Indians to receive the life's education that his father received from the Chiricahua tribe when he was a boy. The Chiricahuas were all but gone from Arizona having been betrayed by the army, rounded up, and sent to Florida. The Ndee were related to the Chiricahua and Josh Sr. was the blood-brother of their chief Tarak.Josh met Kenettay a nephew of the great Geronimo, hiding from the army with the Ndee. These two boys became great friends and lived together most of their lives. Kenettay lived with the Kellys and received an excellent education in schooling and the ways of the white society. He even learned to play the piano. They took turns living in Josh's white world and Tarak's Indian reservation. Together they drifted from place to place doing odd jobs as ranch hands and bronco busters. Then the War with Spain developed. While in jail for drunkenness, Buckey O'Neill found Josh Jr. and gave him a choice to join up with his company of Arizona Volunteers or stay in jail and live life as a drunken fool. Josh and Kenettay joined and became part of the 1st Volunteer Cavalry under the command of Colonel Leonard Wood and LT. Col. Theodore Roosevelt. Josh Jr. and Kenettay became part of the legendary "Rough Riders". Josh entered the war as a boy and emerged as a man. During his time in service, he made a new lifelong friend in New York Socialite Peter Morgan. They remained in contact to the day they died.
