About the Book

It is matter of immense gratification as well as academic privilege for me, a teacher of yester years, to write a few words of introduction to the collection of reflections and view-points of working academicians who participated in 3-stages seminar on 'Self-Culture' organized by Malwa Central College of education for Women, Ludhiana, under the aegis of University grants Commission, New Delhi. Te probing title of Seminar 'Journey Towards Self-Culture' is a penetrating, thought-provoking subject of practical connotations which may lead to better living culture. The Principal of Malwa Central College of Education for Women, Ludhiana and the organizers of the Seminar deserve true commendation for having chosen a topic which is the need of the time 'Journey Towards Self-Culture' when 'Self-Culture' has merged with 'Life-Culture'. As soon as the topic is given voice, one is reminded of Lala Hardyal's hints for 'Self-Culture' published as back as 1971 for the first time by Jaico Press Pvt. Ltd., Bombay. Human life is a spectrum of mixed colours and shades. As you walk through the corridor of this spectrum, the windows and openings on either side bring forth windows and openings on either side bring for the scenes of variegated cultures, and affiliations and speculations. The summum bonnum of these mixed shades of cultures is Self-Culture which gets shaped into an amalgam of physical culture, knowledge culture, aesthetic culture and social culture. While on the journey towards self culture an 'individual' of sensitive nature steals the fragrance of each to give shape to his/her self-culture, to carve his/her persona that stands apart in this life of valued privileges and coveted obligations. Malwa Central College of Education for Women, Ludhiana deserves all applaus for having dared to organize three National seminars on 'Journey Towards Self-Culture', giving this book a treasury of ideas- whether it is on knowledge society or on environment conservation, whether it is seeking a way out of economic turmoil of stressing upon the role of media in self-improvement. Besides these vital themes, the seminarians from across the national corridors of education expressed their valued views on physical culture, knowledge culture, aesthetic culture, ethical culture, social culture and many other related themes. It is heartening to place on record that under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. Ravinder Kaur, the three members of academic faculty of Malwa Central College of Education for Women, Ludhiana, Dr. Naginder Kaur, Mrs. Tripta, Dr. Navneet Kaur have done a commendable job in compiling the divergent and convergent views of the seminarians into a readable form. Their combined effort will be amply rewarded if each reader picks up a pinch of self-culture from the sea of visions expressed by experts and compiled in the present volume. This and this ALONE will cultivate the 'inner power and strength' of every living human being, deprived of which every individual does breathe but never lives in the true meaning of humanity.About the AuthorDr. Ravinder Kaur is Principal in Malwa Central College of Education for Women, Ludhiana.
