About the Book

Just Passing By is a breezy adventure through theatre and Greenwich Village in the 1940s and 1950s, providing "rare footage" from that memorable time. It begins at Catholic University's theatre program and its powerhouse staff, which included Father Hartke, Walter Kerr, and the renowned director Alan Schneider. The author knew them all.

She experienced Greenwich Village in the era of the Beat Generation, the Village Voice, jazz clubs, and sandals. As a member of the Circle-in-the-Square theatre, she was behind-the-scenes with José Quintero, Ted Mann, the actor Jason Wingreen, and many others.

She knew Gregory Corso (who stayed at her Village apartment when he was temporarily broke), listened to Dylan Thomas at the White Horse Tavern, and posed for Andy Warhol (whom she double-dated at Carnegie Tech).

You will also discover...

  • How a pair of slacks mobilized the entire Carnegie Tech Drama Department against the Dean of Women.
  • Who the best fighter was in a massive brawl at the White Horse Tavern: Gregory Corso, a philosophy professor, or her date.
  • Why the Circle-in-the-Square was originally lined with mirrors, and the nature of the scenes etched upon them.

About the Author: Beverly Noble was born in Oklahoma City in 1929. She lived in Oklahoma for the first four years of her life, and in the District of Columbia for the next fourteen. In her teens she studied and performed with a semi-professional theatre company at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., then attended Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon University), in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, majoring in drama. She then moved to Greenwich Village and became a member of the Circle-in-the-Square Theatre. During this period she took up writing, painting, and sculpting. In the 1980s she was a member of the Ward-Nasse Gallery on Prince Street in Manhattan's Soho district, and the White Lights Gallery in Nyack, New York. She has had many combined and one-person shows for both her paintings and sculptures. She is married and has two children.
