Angeheizt durch die Medien entsteht das Bild einer brüchiger werdenden Generationensolidarität. Die Distanz zwischen den Generationen ist oft so groß, dass der soziale Friede gefährdet scheint. Deutlich zeigt sich dies beispielsweise in der Armutsdebatte, in der unter Überschriften wie "Arme Junge, reiche Alte" oder "(Verteilungs-) Kampf der Generationen" eine soziale Polarisierung stattfindet. Diese zunehmende Distanz macht sich auch im schulischen Leben bemerkbar: Kinder haben vielfach nur noch sporadisch Kontakt zu alten Menschen. Eine solche Entwicklung einer Entfremdung der Lebenswelten führt schließlich zu einer Verinselung der Generationen. Auf Seiten der Kinder lässt sich dies daran erkennen, dass sie überwiegend ein Leben in pädagogisch besetzten Räumen führen, die für sie geschaffen wurden und zwischen denen sie meist ausschließlich hin und her wechseln.In Zukunft wird dieser Trend durch den flächendeckenden Ausbau der Ganztagsangebote vermutlich noch verstärkt. Aus dieser einseitigen Einschränkung des Personenkreises, zu dem Kinder oft nur noch Zugang haben, resultieren erkennbar Defizite für die Entwicklung. So hat man heute vielfach den Eindruck, Kindern sind das Gefühl und die Wahrnehmung für ihre Umwelt und ihre Mitmenschen verloren gegangen. Aber auch die alten Menschen führen heute eher ein ausgefülltes Rentnerleben in der eigenen Generation bis zu dem Zeitpunkt, an dem sie nicht mehr für sich sorgen können und in für sie bestimmten Räumen auf das Abstellgleis geschoben werden. Kontakte von alten Menschen zu Kindern kommen so nur vereinzelt zu Stande. Dabei sind heute alte Menschen so lange geistig und körperlich fit wie keine Generation zuvor.
