About the Book

Kairos é a história do primeiro projeto de arquitetura - no seu sentido mais elevado - para um projeto espacial. Entre 2008 e 2011, o arquiteto e urbanista Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta projetou um edifício para estar permanentemente em órbita da Terra. Para além de um projeto de arquitetura, é ainda uma reflexão sobre a condição humana, sobre a possibilidade do fim das guerras, do salto da Humanidade para o Universo e sobre uma metamorfose civilizacional. Mas também é um questionamento técnico e tecnológico, e uma obra de arte. Com textos adicionais dos arquitetos Carlos Zibel e Bruno Padovano, do astrofísico Amâncio Friaça, e um poema do artista hípermedia Artur Matuck - todos da USP Universidade de São Paulo, o livro de Emanuel Pimenta também conta a história do desenho das estações espaciais, do século XIX aos dias de hoje, numa fabulosa viagem com o leitor.
About the Author: Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta (1957) tem sido considerado por muitos como um dos mais interessantes arquitetos, músicos, fotógrafos e artistas intermédia no início do terceiro milênio - de acordo com testemunhos escritos por John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Lucrezia De Domizio, Merce Cunningham, John Archibald Wheeler, René Berger, Dove Bradshaw, Daniel Charles, Phill Niblock ou William Anastasi entre outros. Os seus trabalhos estão incluídos em algumas das mais importantes coleções de arte e em instituições mundialmente reconhecidas como o Whitney Museum de Nova Iorque; o museu de arte contemporânea ARS AEVI, de Sarajevo; a Bienal de Veneza; o CyberArt Museum de Seattle; o Kunsthaus de Zurique, a coleção de arte contemporânea Durini; a Biblioteca Nacional de Paris; e o MART Museu de Arte Moderna de Rovereto e Trento entre outros. Ele desenvolve arquitetura, urbanismo e música usando tecnologias de realidade virtual, ciberespaço e neurociências. Os seus trabalhos estão incluídos na Enciclopédia Universalis (Enciclopédia Britânica) desde 1991; no Sloninky Baker's Music Dictionary (Berkeley); na Cronologia da Música Clássica Ocidental de Charles Hall; no All Music Guide - The Expert's Guide to the Best Cds, na Wikipedia e no Babilon entre outros. Artigos sobre os seus trabalhos têm aparecido regularmente em diferentes jornais e revistas como The Wire, Ear, The New York Times, Le Monde, le Parisien, Liberation, O Estado de São Paulo, O Expresso, O Público, O Globo, Il Sole 24 Ore e la Reppublica entre outros. No início dos anos 1980, Emanuel Pimenta cunhou o conceito de arquitetura virtual, mais tarde amplamente usado como disciplina em universidades de todo o mundo. Entre os seus desafiadores projetos há a famosa ilha flutuante para Lisboa, Portugal; uma ilha flutuante experimental para o Lago Maggiore, na Suíça; o edifício Symmetrion em Budapeste, Hungria; e o Museu do Desenho do Tempo em Trancoso, Portugal. No final dos anos 1980, ele publicou o primeiro livro em todo o mundo sobre arquitetura virtual. Em 1981 ele deu início à elaboração de Woiksed - o primeiro planeta virtual do mundo, antecipando o Second Life em cerca de vinte anos. Em 1994, ele recebeu um prêmio europeu por esse projeto. Nos anos 1990, ele foi curador das primeiras exposições em todo o mundo sobre arquitetura virtual. Uma dessas exposições aconteceu na Bienal de São Paulo 1999 e 2000.
