Folglich beschäftigt sich die Arbeit mit der Fragestellung "Inwiefern kann anhand der Annalen schlussgefolgert werden, dass Tacitus dem Kaiser Nero die Schuld am Brand Roms und die Christenverfolgung als Strafe für diesen zugeschrieben hat?". Demnach wird analysiert, in welchem Ausmaß diese Quelle als glaubwürdig erscheint und welche Aspekte möglicherweise als verzerrt oder widersprüchlich angesehen werden können. Um einen umfassenden Überblick in das Thema zu bieten, widmet sich das erste Kapitel einer Biografie Neros und Tacitus'. Auf diese Weise wird eine erste Vorstellung bezüglich der beiden Hauptpersonen ermöglicht. Hierbei bieten vor allem die Werke von Sonnabend und Waldherr adäquate Anhaltspunkte. Damit einhergehend wird das zu analysierende Werk kurz und bündig vorgestellt und ebenfalls auf den Brand Roms eingegangen. Anschließend erfolgt eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der Quelle. Demnach werden unter anderem die Aspekte des Namens Chrestiani, der Schuldfrage, des Vorgehens der Bestrafung und der Möglichkeit des Begründers der Christenverfolgung untersucht. Für die Analyse gilt die Quelle mit dem Titel Annalen von Tacitus als Hauptwerk. Unterstützende Erkenntnisse liefern diesbezüglich unter anderem die Werke von Baudy, Fuchs, Lund und Meier. Schlussendlich rundet das Fazit die Arbeit mit den interpretierten Ergebnissen ab.
