Diese Aussage hat der antiochenische Sophist Libanios in seiner Leichenrede auf den im Perserfeldzug gefallenen Kaiser Julian, der sich im Rahmen seiner Religionspolitik den paganen Kulten widmete und sein Ziel einer Repaganisierung des Römischen Reiches verfolgte, niedergeschrieben, was eine Nuance seines Idealbildes eines Herrschers darstellt. Dieses Kaiserideal und die Entwicklung desselben in den Werken des Antiocheners sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit. Um das Herrscherideal zu veranschaulichen, werden ausgewählte Reden des heidnischen Sophisten analysiert und miteinander verglichen. In der Kaiserrede 'Auf Kaiser Julian als Konsul' wird zwar ein Bild des Herrschers entworfen, das vom Kaiser selbst so gesehen und gehört werden wollte, jedoch entsprach dieses kaiserliche Selbstverständnis auch den Vorstellungen des Libanios, der sich mit den politischen, religiösen und kulturellen Zielen Julians weitgehend identifizieren konnte. Im 'Epitaphios auf Julian' steigert der sich den paganen Götterkulten verschriebene Sophist dieses Idealbild und setzt es als Maßstab für Julians Nachfolger. Theodosius I. herrschte ab 379 n. Chr. als christlicher Kaiser über das Imperium Romanum, weshalb Libanios sein Kaiserideal den politischen Verhältnissen entsprechend anpassen musste, um weiterhin als Redner anerkannt zu werden und Einfluss auf den Kaiser ausüben zu können.
