Depuis le début de sa papauté en 2013, le pape François se fait remarquer et admirer par ses prises de position étonnamment progressistes par rapport à la justice sociale et l'environnement. Et il dénonce haut et fort le cléricalisme qui existe dans l'Église catholique et a posé de nombreux gestes pour montrer qu'il cherche, comme pape, à s'en éloigner: il a choisi de vivre dans la résidence modeste Santa Marta au lieu des appartements pontificaux traditionnels; il a choisi une voiture usagée pour ses déplacements au lieu d'une limousine; pour sa première sortie officielle, il a choisi Lampedusa, où arrivent régulièrement de l'Afrique de milliers de réfugiés que l'Europe cherche à refouler; il invite parfois les exclus à sa table pour partager un repas avec lui.
Tout cela étant reconnu, Ovide Bastien argumente dans ce livre que le pape François demeure toujours immergé dans le cléricalisme. Et pour le démontrer, il décrit en détail ce qu'il appelle la pire gaffe du pape jusqu'à maintenant, celle qu'il commettait, lors de son séjour au Chili en janvier 2018, dans l'affaire Fernando Karadima, prêtre grand abuseur de mineurs et de jeunes. Une gaffe qui a rapidement fait la une dans le monde entier et éclaboussé sa crédibilité, qui, depuis le début de sa papauté avait été remarquable.
On sait que le pape s'est rapidement ravisé, a envoyé deux enquêteurs au Chili, lu leur rapport dévastateur, invité chez lui à Rome trois des victimes de Karadima, s'est excusé de sa gaffe, laquelle, il a insisté, provenait du fait qu'il avait été mal informé, et, enfin, a réprimandé publiquement les évêques chiliens en les convoquant à Rome où ils soumettaient collectivement leur démission.
Ce retournement spectaculaire, selon Bastien, représente surtout une tentative du pape de restaurer sa crédibilité comme leader. En attribuant sa gaffe au fait d'avoir été mal informé, il transformait l'épiscopat chilien en brebis expiatoire, amenant l'opinion publique à se détourner de son propre comportement cléricaliste envers les victimes et à se focaliser carrément sur celui des évêques chiliens.
Car l'attitude du pape François envers les victimes de Karadima, qui, à cause de la tempête médiatique, éclaboussait sa crédibilité, ne diffère en rien de celle qu'il adoptait envers les victimes de prêtres abuseurs en Argentine lorsqu'il était archevêque de Buenos Aires, et, en 2020, envers les victimes de son ex-bras droit au Vatican, le cardinal australien George Pell.
