Reunimos en este volumen cuatro escritos en los que el padre de la socialdemocracia, Eduard Bernstein, expuso su revision de la doctrina marxiana y su concepcion del socialismo evolucionista como fruto maduro del liberalismo. «Marx ha sido comparado a menudo con Darwin, y, en mi opinion, muy acertadamente». «En este sentido hay que interpretar lo que dice en el prefacio de Das Kapital: “Una sociedad, incluso cuando ha tomado el camino correcto para el descubrimiento de la ley natural de su evolucion, no puede saltar sobre las fases normales de su desarrollo ni puede eliminarlas por decreto”. [...] Marx era por tanto, si asi se quiere decir, un evolucionista revolucionario. Pero [...] resistio con firmeza la tentacion de prescribir remedios para el futuro. Asi pues, la tarea de sus discipulos es estudiar las condiciones economicas dadas de la sociedad, seguir de cerca su marcha, verificar que ha de hacerse, no desde un imaginario mundo socialista perfecto, sino desde el mundo muy imperfecto en el que vivimos [...]. Con ese espiritu dije en su dia que, para mi, el movimiento lo es todo, mientras que lo que ordinariamente se denomina el objetivo final del socialismo no es nada; y con ese espiritu todavia lo sostengo hoy. [...] Por ultimo, seria recomendable cierta moderacion cuando se le declara la guerra al “liberalismo”. Es cierto que el gran movimiento liberal de los tiempos modernos ha beneficiado en primer lugar a la burguesia capitalista [...]. Ahora bien, por lo que respecta al liberalismo como gran movimiento historico, no cabe duda de que el socialismo es su heredero legitimo, no solo desde el punto de vista cronologico sino tambien desde el intelectual. [...] De hecho, no hay pensamiento liberal que no forme parte del equipaje teorico del socialismo. [...] Para destruir el feudalismo y sus rigidas instituciones corporativas fue necesaria la fuerza [...]. Pero las instituciones liberales de la sociedad moderna difieren de aquellas precisamente en que son flexibles y capaces de cambiar y desarrollarse. No es necesario destruirlas, sino tan solo profundizar en su desarrollo.»
