Vor langer, langer Zeit wohnte in Puddemin ein Bauer, der hatte eine schöne und fromme Frau, die fleißig betete und alle Sonntage und Festtage zur Kirche ging, auch den Armen, die vor ihre Türe kamen, gern gab. Es war überhaupt eine freundliche und mitleidige Seele und im ganzen Dorfe und Kirchspiele von allen Leuten geliebt. Nie hat man ein hartes Wort von ihr gehört, noch ist ein Fluch und Schwur oder andere Ungebühr je aus ihrem Munde gegangen. Diese Frau hatte sieben Kinder, lauter kleine Dirnen, von welchen die älteste zwölf und die jüngste zwei Jahr alt war: hübsche, lustige Dingelchen. Diese gingen alle übereins gekleidet, mit bunten Röckchen und bunten Schürzen und roten Mützchen; Schuhe aber und Strümpfe hatten sie nicht an, denn das hätte zuviel gekostet, sondern gingen barfuß. Die Mutter hielt sie nett und reinlich, wusch und kämmte sie morgens früh und abends spät, wann sie aufstanden und zu Bett gingen, lehrte sie lesen und singen und erzog sie in aller Freundlichkeit und Gottesfurcht. Wann sie auf dem Felde was zu tun hatte oder weit ausgehen mußte, stellte sie die älteste, welche Barbara hieß, über die andern; diese mußte auf sie sehen, ihnen was erzählen, auch wohl etwas vorlesen. Nun begab es sich einmal, daß ein hoher Festtag war (ich glaube, es war der Karfreitag), da ging die Bauerfrau mit ihrem Manne zur Kirche und sagte den Kindern, sie sollten hübsch artig sein; der Barbara aber und den nächst älteren gab sie ein paar Lieder auf aus dem Gesangbuche, die sie auswendig lernen sollten. So ging sie weg. Barbara und die andern Kinder waren anfangs auch recht artig; die älteren nahmen die Bücher und lasen, und die kleinsten saßen still auf dem Boden und spielten. Als sie so saßen, da erblickte das eine Kind etwas hinter dem Ofen und rief: "O seht! Seht! Was ist das für ein schöner und weißer Beutel!" Es war aber ein Beutel mit Nüssen und Äpfeln, den die Mutter des Morgens da hingehängt hatte und den sie des Nachmittags einem ihrer kleinen Paten brin
