Kenilworth (en anglais, Kenilworth; A Romance) est un roman historique de l'auteur écossais Walter Scott, paru le 15 janvier 1821. Il s'inspire de la mort suspecte d'Amy Robsart, épouse de Robert Dudley, favori d'Élisabeth Ire. Le titre du roman fait référence au château de Robert Dudley, à Kenilworth, dans le Warwickshire. L'intrigue de Kenilworth est centrée sur le mariage secret de Robert Dudley, comte de Leicester, et d'Amy Robsart, fille de sir Hugh Robsart. La tragédie commence quand Amy, trahissant les espérances de son père - qui la destine au fils d'un vieil ami, Tressilian -, se laisse séduire par le comte et accepte de s'enfuir avec lui pour l'épouser. Amy aime passionnément son époux, qui éprouve les mêmes sentiments, mais est dominé par une ambition dévorante. Favori de la reine Élisabeth Ire, il fait un mariage contrecarrant ses projets, qui sont d'obtenir la main d'Élisabeth pour partager le trône avec elle. À la fin du roman, le comte finit par avouer la vérité à la reine. Mais cette révélation arrive trop tard pour Amy qui, victime des intrigues de l'écuyer du comte, Varney, un homme aussi ambitieux que son maître et présenté comme un être démoniaque, périt assassinée à Cumnor Place, où elle demeurait cachée.
About the Author: Walter Scott (Sir Walter Scott, 1er baronnet) est un poète et écrivain écossais né le 15 août 1771 à Édimbourg et mort le 21 septembre 1832 à Abbotsford. Avocat de formation, amateur d'antiquités, il parcourt d'abord l'Écosse à la recherche de son passé. Au tournant du XVIIIe et du XIXe siècles, il se lance dans la littérature, publiant des textes anciens (Sir Tristrem) ou appartenant à la tradition populaire (dans Les Chants de ménestrels de la frontière écossaise) ainsi que des poèmes de son cru, comme La Dame du lac. Puis, devant la gloire montante de Lord Byron, il se tourne vers le roman écossais (Waverley), avant d'évoluer vers le roman historique, avec Ivanhoé (1819) et Quentin Durward (1823). C'est l'un des plus célèbres auteurs écossais avec David Hume de Godscroft, David Hume, Adam Smith, Robert Burns ou Robert Louis Stevenson, traditionnellement surnommé le Magicien du Nord (Wizard of the North). Il est également, avec Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley ou Keats, l'une des plus illustres figures du romantisme britannique. Père du roman historique, il a contribué à forger une image romantique de l'Écosse et de son histoire. C'est à lui, notamment, que l'on doit le retour de l'usage du tartan et du kilt, dont le port avait été interdit par une loi du Parlement en 1746.
