En plus d'une technicite deja assez rebarbative, l'ouvrage n'epargne au lecteur aucun detail d'une recherche emaillee de revers de fortune et d'hypotheses sans lendemain. Mais ceux qui ont eu le courage de le lire ont pu etre les temoins d'une victoire inouie, et d'une mutation radicale de la science astronomique devenue physique celeste . Tous les mouvements celestes sont desormais demontres par leur cause physique: une vertu motrice emanee du soleil, cur et vrai centre du monde. L'Astronomia Nova assure donc le triomphe de la theorie copernicienne, contre Aristote, Ptolemee, Tycho Brahe et d'autres. Elle va meme plus loin: en renoncant au principe du mouvement circulaire uniforme la premiere des deux lois decouvertes dans cet ouvrage definit la trajectoire elliptique des planetes, elle ouvre un horizon nouveau a ce qu'on appellera bientot la mecanique celeste . Toutes les contributions reunies dans ce volume concourent a jeter un eclairage nouveau sur une uvre qui a aussi contribue a redefinir les criteres de la scientificite et l'objet meme du savoir a l'epoque moderne: en ruinant la theorie aristotelicienne des moteurs celestes, l'Astronomia nova a porte un coup fatal a la definition traditionnelle de la metaphysique, en sa dimension the(i)ologique, comme science des substances immobiles et separees. C'est dire qu'en depit d'un propos a la fois tres technique et circonscrit, l'uvre de l'astronome imperial a ebranle les bases sur lesquelles reposait tout l'edifice du savoir au seuil de l'epoque moderne. Au-dela de son public savant et mathematicien, l'uvre interesse donc ou devrait interesser tous ceux qui veulent savoir ce que c'est que savoir.
