About the Book

The book is an empirical study of the various aspects of Khasi life from the pre-colonial times to the present. The work traces the socio-cultural identity of the Khasis in conjunction with their oral tradition portrayed in literary works to explore if such texts serve the purpose of documenting or making an enquiry into the age-old traditions of the Khasis. Major shifts in this identity could be seen with the arrival of the British administrators to the Khasi Hills and the subsequent advent of Christianity and English education by the missionaries. It is in this context that the book dwells upon the various facets of Khasi life to examine how that identity transformed to what constitutes the Khasi people's existence today. The findings of the study include the various shifts in the Khasi religion, matrilineal culture, oral tradition, beliefs, and rituals in today's time. The book is useful to students, research scholars, and academics engaged in the study of indigenous cultures and traditions. About the author Dr. Payel Dutta Chowdhury is currently working as Professor and Director at the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at REVA University, Bangalore, India.
