Der Fokus dieser Arbeit soll auf zwei teilweise konkurrierenden Ansät-zen aus der Familienökonomie liegen. Der Ansatz des Humankapitaleffekts geht davon aus, dass die Entscheidung für bzw. gegen Kinder einer rationalen Kosten-Nutzen-Abwägung folgt. In der Regel weisen Frauen mit hoher Bildung und da-mit einhergehend hoch zu erwartendem Erwerbseinkommen, hohe Kosten in Be-zug auf die Mutterschaft auf. Dies wird damit begründet, dass oft noch eine ge-schlechtsspezifische Arbeitsteilung vorliege und im Falle der Entscheidung für ein Kind, Frauen entweder aus dem Beruf ausstiegen oder eine Doppelbelastung in Kauf nähmen. Die Entscheidung für Kinder bei Frauen mit hohem Bildungsniveau würde deshalb, bei angenommener geschlechtsspezifischer Arbeitsteilung, negativ ausfallen. Im Gegensatz zur Theorie des Humankapitaleffekts geht die des Institutioneneffekts davon aus, dass sich die Familiengründung, bedingt durch die längeren Aus-bildungszeiten insbesondere bei den Hochgebildeten, nach hinten verschiebe. Die hoch gebildeten Frauen blieben demnach nicht dauerhaft kinderlos, sondern würden ihre Familiengründungsphase nur zeitlich nach hinten verschieben. Die Frage, die sich stellt und der in dieser Arbeit nachgegangen wird, ist, ob sich eher empirische Belege für das Zutreffen des Humankapitaleffekts oder aber des Institutioneneffekts hinsichtlich der Kinderlosigkeit von Akademikerinnen fest-stellen lassen. Es geht also darum, ob bei den hoch gebildeten Frauen eher eine dauerhafte Kinderlosigkeit oder eine Verschiebung der Familiengründungsphase nachweisbar ist.
