Aus heftigsten gesellschaftlichen Unruhen, an der Kunstler wesentlich beteiligt waren, entstand vor ungefahr 40 Jahren in Japan ein neues Verstandnis von zeitgenossischem Tanz(theater): Butoh oder der Tanz der Finsternis. Von Tatsumi Hijikata und Kazuo Ohno Ende der 50er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts ausgelost und weiterentwickelt, mundete Butoh in einer weltweit verbreiteten Kunstform, die das absolut menschliche Sein und die Notwendigkeit seines Ausdrucks betont. In aller Konsequenz geht es darum, mit dem Konzept von "Schonheit" zu brechen, mit der (eitlen) Vorstellung von "mir selbst". Es geht um das "Anti-Ich" und die "Anti-Show". Obwohl auch von Wurzeln altester Folkloretraditionen Japans gespeist, sind Einflusse europaischer Stromungen des Deutschen Expressionismus bzw. Ausdruckstanzes oder des Dadaismus und Surrealismus zu erkennen. Erstmals werden in diesem Buch Parallelen zu dem in den spaten 50er und 60er Jahren weltweit forcierten Aktionismus aufgezeigt. Diese multivalenten Ansatzpunkte boten der Steirischen Kulturinitiative ab 1994 die Moglichkeit, Butoh in mehreren Tanzlabors als Theater-nahe Fortsetzung der japanischen Auspragung des Aktionismus sowie von adoptierten Formen des Ausdruckstanzes in einen Erkenntnisprozess fur professionelle, semiprofessionelle und Laien-TanzerInnen einzubringen. So erarbeitete die weltweit engagierte Butoh-Choreografin und Tanzerin Yumiko Yoshioka in drei Butoh-Workshop-Projekten 1995, 1996 und 1997 mit TanzerInnen unterschiedlichen Niveaus in kaum zwei Wochen buhnenreife Prasentationen. Uberdies war sie am Beginn der Serie (mit Eclipse) und als Solo-Tanzerin mit i-ki in Graz zu sehen. Auch der in der mitteljapanischen Stadt Kanazawa mittlerweile als Tanztheaterdirektor wirkende Moe Yamamoto hat mit semiprofessionellen und Laientanzerinnen zwei Produktionen gestaltet. 2001 und 2002 war er Lektor der Internationalen Tanzwochen in Wien. Die (so die New York Times) weltweit "vorne stehende" Jazzpianistin Myra Melford kam fur die Urauffuhrung einer Butoh-Produktion mit der in den USA lebenden japanischen Tanzerin Dawn Akemi Saito. "Die Gesten, die sich in meinem Korper versammelt haben, dringen durch meine Arme und Hande hindurch und kommen so zum Vorschein. Wenn ich etwas zu greifen versuche, halt die Hand in mir meine Hand zuruck, sodass sie ihr Ziel nicht erreicht.
