Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich BWL - Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte, Note: 1,7, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Volkswirtschaftliche Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Economic History, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Unterschiedliche Geburtenraten zwischen dem armen und dem reichen Teil der Bevölkerung beeinflussten die historische Entwicklung der Gesellschaften. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Annahme, dass Reiche eine höhere Geburtenrate hatten als arme meist zutrifft aber in Einzelfällen auch widerlegt werden kann. Im Weiteren wird auf die unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Gesellschaft durch die höheren Geburtenraten von dem reichen Teil der Bevölkerung eingegangen, wie beispielsweise der soziale Abstieg. In der Zeit vor der industriellen Revolution gab es wenig Bevölkerungswachstum, es lag stets unter 1% pro Jahr, teilweise war auch ein Rückgang der Einwohnerzahl zu verzeichnen. Die Zusammensetzung der Bevölkerung, sprich der Anteil von Armen und Reichen an der Bevölkerung hat sich jedoch immer wieder geändert. Dies konnte starken Einfluss auf die Gesellschaft haben. Gregory Clark führt diesen Grund sogar als eine der Hauptursachen dafür an, dass die industrielle Revolution überhaupt so stattfinden konnte. Im vorindustriellen England war die Geburtenrate der Reichen deutlich höher als die der Armen, wodurch ein fortlaufender sozialer Abstieg in der Gesellschaft in Gang gesetzt wurde. Erst dadurch konnte sich die Denkweise und Bildung der Oberschicht in der gesamten Bevölkerung verbreiten. Damit wurde auch dem einfachen Arbeiter die Bedeutung der Arbeitsteilung und seiner eigenen gewissenhaften Arbeit bewusst. Besonders hervorzuheben ist in diesem Zusammenhang, dass im 18. Jahrhundert in England keine höhere Vergütung für die Fähigkeit lesen und schreiben zu können erzielt wurde als im 12. Jahrhundert.
