Klatsch ist ein Phänomen, das in einfachen Stammesgesellschaften ebenso wie in der heutigen, digitalen Mediengesellschaft zu finden ist. Zwar wird Klatsch in allen Gesellschaften als Verletzung der Umgangsformen missbilligt, dennoch ist er quer durch alle sozialen Gruppen weit verbreitet und bildet für die Klatschakteure ein Faszinosum mit einen hohen Unterhaltungswert. Diesem oft als trivial eingeschätzten Phänomen widmet sich die vorliegende Studie. Gestützt auf Transkriptionen und Protokolle realer Klatschgespräche wird gezeigt, dass Klatschgespräche bestimmt werden von einer triadischen Beziehungskonstellation, bei der die Klatschakteure über abwesende Bekannte oder Kollegen pikante Neuigkeiten austauschen und moralische Urteile fällen. Dabei stecken die Klatschakteure jedoch in einem Dilemma - der Drang des einen, ein vertrauliches Wissen zu teilen und die Erwartung des anderen, ins Vertrauen gezogen zu werden, geraten in Konflikt mit ihrer Loyalität gegenüber dem abwesenden Dritten. Die Lösung dieses Dilemmas verleiht dem Klatsch seine paradoxe Qualität. Wer klatscht, begeht eine Indiskretion, verhält sich aber zugleich diskret, da er seine Informationen nicht beliebig streut, sondern unter dem Siegel der Verschwiegenheit weitergibt. Klatsch ist die Sozialform der diskreten Indiskretion. Aufbauend auf dieser Überlegung und in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit anthropologischen, soziologischen und linguistischen Erklärungsansätzen entwickelt die Studie eine Theorie von Klatsch als einer eigenen Gattung der alltäglichen moralischen Kommunikation. Die vorliegende Studie, die ursprünglich 1987 erschienen ist, hat nicht nur die empirische Untersuchung von moralischer Kommunikation im Alltag angestoßen, sondern auch wesentlich dazu beigetragen, die Forschungsrichtung der Gattungsanalyse auf den Weg zu bringen. Mehrfach wurde der Studie in der Literatur der Status eines Klassikers bescheinigt. Sie erscheint hier in einer zweiten, überarbeiteten Auflage, die um mehrere Zusätze erweitert wurde, in denen u.a. Prominentenklatsch, Klatsch und Gerücht, Klatsch in Organisationen am Beispiel von Wissenschaftsklatsch, Klatsch in der digitalen Mediengesellschaft und Veränderung von Moral in der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft behandelt werden.
