Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,3, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Neuere und Neueste Geschichte), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar Adel in der Frühen Neuzeit, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der Adel stellte im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation die Spitze und das Leitbild der ständischen Gesellschaft dar. Er hatte sich in Krisen immer wieder durch neue Legitimationsstrategien als Machtelite und Herrschaftsstand behaupten können. Im 16. Jahrhundert führte die Adelskrise zu einer Umorientierung des Adels hin zur Bildung, was bis dahin ein rein bürgerliches Ideal gewesen war. Letztlich trat der Adel gestärkt aus dieser Krise hervor. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts verschärft sich im Zuge der Aufklärung die Kritik an der unumschränkten Vormachtstellung des Adels. Legitimierte sich der Adel im 16. Jahrhundert noch durch seine Geburt, die ihm eine "gottgegebene" Vorrangstellung sicherte1, so wurde im Kameralismus die Forderung laut, dass der Adel seinen Status und seine Privilegien dadurch begründen solle, dass er auch der Staatswirtschaft dient. Kritiker des Adels, die beispielsweise aus dem Erbadel einen Verdienstadel schaffen wollten, stammten überwiegend aus dem Bürgertum,2 hier stellte aber Adolph Freiherr von Knigge eine Ausnahme dar. Zum einen verkörperte Knigge einen Vertreter des landsässigen Adels, der ein Zeitzeuge des Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges und der Französischen Revolution war. Zum anderen kommt dazu die Besonderheit, dass Knigge als Vertreter des Geburtsadels seine eigenen Standesgenossen kritisiert. Im Folgenden wird also eine Person betrachtet, die sowohl die adlige Herkunft als auch die Kritik des Adels in sich vereint. Besonders ist an Knigge auch der Umstand, als ein Adliger freier Schriftsteller gewesen zu sein - in einer Zeit, als dieser Beruf grundsätzlich noch nicht sehr weit verbreitet war.3 Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit soll auf der Adelskritik Kni
