Die Gruppe trägt nicht nur zur Aufgabenerfüllung bei, sondern dient dem einzelnen Mitglied auch der Befriedigung seiner sozialen Bedürfnisse. Dort, wo Menschen aufeinander treffen und zusammen arbeiten, kommt es zu Sympathie wie auch zu emotionalen Spannungen, die sich in Konflikten entladen können. Die Bedeutung des Konfliktphänomens zeigt sich darin, dass Führungskräfte bereits in den 70er Jahren ein Fünftel ihrer Arbeitszeit mit der Bewältigung von Konflikten verbrachten. Es existieren zahlreiche empirische Untersuchungen, Modelle und Gestaltungsempfehlungen, die den Konflikt von verschiedenen Seiten beleuchten. Basierend auf diesen Studien und Modellen wird hier ein umfassender und strukturierter Überblick über das Phänomen des Konfliktes innerhalb formaler Gruppen aus der Perspektive der Organisation gegeben. Es wird zunächst expliziert, welche Arten von Gruppen betrachtet werden und welche anderen Arten von Konflikten abgegrenzt werden. Klassifikationsmöglichkeiten dieser Konflikte nach unterschiedlichen Dimensionen werden vorgestellt. Mögliche Ursachen für die Konfliktentstehung werden ergründet und typische Verläufe von Konflikten erläutert, bevor negative und auch positive Auswirkungen von Konflikten dargestellt werden. Es werden abschließend Maßnahmen des Konfliktmanagements vorgestellt, um Konflikte gezielt im Sinne der Organisation steuern zu können. Spezifische Besonderheiten von interorganisationellen oder Intergruppenkonflikten bleiben bei der Betrachtung außen vor. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf den Intragruppenkonflikten.
