Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Kurz vor der Jahrtausendwende nahmen 27 kleine Kinos in den USA den Low-Budget Film „The Blair Witch Project" in ihr Programm auf: Und lösten damit geradezu eine Massenhysterie aus. Der Streifen, der größtenteils aus verwackelten Amateuraufnahmen besteht und ausschließlich mit No-Name-Schauspielern besetzt ist, sorgte für lange Schlangen vor den Kassen. Die angeblich authentische „Dokumentation" erzählt die Geschichte dreier Studenten, die einen Film über die Hexe von Blair drehen wollen. Das Trio bricht zu einer Expedition in die Wälder von Maryland auf und kehrt nie zurück: Lediglich ihr Videomaterial wird gefunden und zu dem Film „The Blair Witch Project" zusammengeschnitten. Allein in den ersten fünf Tagen nach dem Kinostart spielte das Regiedebut der Jungregisseure Eduardo Sanchez und Daniel Myrick 1,5 Millionen Dollar ein. Ein Ergebnis, welches sich später noch verhundertfachen sollte. Bei Herstellungskosten von höchstens 60,000 Dollar wurde das Blair Witch Project so zu dem bis dahin profitabelsten Film aller Zeiten. Die vorliegende Arbeit legt die Gründe für den phänomenalen Erfolg eines Streifens dar, der Hollywoods Politik des Staraufgebots und der Splattereffekte exemplarisch in Frage gestellt hat. Dabei wird die Marketingkampagne der Filmemacher beleuchtet, die sich fast ausschließlich auf das Internet stützte. Aufmerksamkeit verdient dabei auch die Regietechnik von Sanchez und Myrick: Anstatt den Protagonisten ein Drehbuch in die Hand zu geben, setzten sie die Schauspieler mit Zelt und Rucksack in der Wildnis aus. Grobe Regieanweisungen sowie knappen Proviant fanden sie an zuvor festgelegten Orten vor, im Übrigen wurde improvisiert. Nachdem sich der erste Teil dieser Arbeit mit den Gründen für den Realismus des Blair Witch Projects beschäftigt, wird anschließend auf dessen Wirkung eingegangen.
