Einleitung "Benn ist ein großer Poet: Einige seiner dunkel suggestiven, tragisch kühnen Verse haben sich mir für immer eingeprägt, ihr Rhythmus bleibt mir im Blut wie das Echo früh gehörter, früh geliebter Zaubersprüche. Auch persönlich stand ich damals auf herzlichem Fuße mit dem äußerlich so korrekten und konventionellen Visionär, der es nicht unter seiner Dichterwürde fand, neben- oder hauptberuflich als Spezialist für Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten in einem Berliner Arbeiter¬viertel tätig zu sein." (Klaus Mann zit. in Decker, 2006, S. 230) Mit diesen Worten beschreibt der Schriftsteller Klaus Mann, Sohn von Thomas Mann und Neffe von Heinrich Mann, den expressionistischen Lyriker und Arzt Gottfried Benn 1942 in seiner Autobiografie "Der Wendepunkt" (vgl. Decker, 2006, S. 230). Trotz dieser lobenden Worte gibt es etwa neun Jahre zuvor eine Auseinandersetzung in schriftlicher Form zwischen Gottfried Benn und Klaus Mann aufgrund Benns politischer Position. Gottfried Benn, ein Einzelgänger, der die Menschheit und alles, was mit ihr zu tun hat, ablehnt, wendet sich 1933 den Nationalsozialisten zu, empfängt mit Überzeu¬gung den "Neuen Staat". Klaus Mann, der zu dieser Zeit im Exil in Frankreich lebt, verehrt Benn - doch dessen politische Position kann er nicht akzeptieren. So formuliert er seine Enttäuschung darüber in einem persönlichen Brief vom 9. Mai 1933 an Benn, den dieser in öffentlicher Form im Berliner Rundfunk beantwortet ("Antwort an die literarischen Emigranten"). Der genaue Wortlaut ist den beiden Briefen im Anhang zu entnehmen. Mann reagiert daraufhin 1. Septem¬ber 1933 gleichfalls mit einer öffentlichen Stellungnahme in der Exilzeitschrift "Die Sammlung" und findet harte Worte der Kritik.
