Wenn das Thema überhaupt noch aufkommt, es scheint häufig schon alles gesagt zu sein, werden die immer gleichen Wutreden gehalten: Das Vor- und Nachmittagsprogramm der privaten Sender werde nur noch mit sinnfreien Dokusoaps gefüllt, die öffentlichen rechtlichen Sender gäben "unser" Geld nur für Telenovelas aus und die guten Sachen kämen doch immer nur auf "Arte" oder mitten in der Nacht. Aussagen, die vielleicht nicht wortwörtlich belegbar sind, die aber fast jeder aus eigener Erfahrung kennen dürfte. Diese Diskussion ist natürlich nicht neu, ihr bekanntestes Beispiel ist wahrscheinlich Adornos "Prolog zum Fernsehen" (1977: 74-75). Nur im Kino oder in der Literatur, so scheint es, sei anspruchsvolle Unterhaltung zu erwarten; nur Filme und Bücher seien nicht nur Vergnügen, sondern auch Kunst, so die kulturpessimistische Betrachtungsweise. Durch das Internet hat sich jedoch die Stellung des Konsumenten von bewegten Bildern zunehmend verändert, denn der Zuschauer hat die Möglichkeit, mündiger zu handeln als je zuvor. Ihm steht eine unzählbare Menge von Inhalten offen, die er jederzeit abrufen kann, um das Programm nach seinen eigenen Wünschen zusammenstellen, und das, ohne sich an Vorgaben von Fernsehsendern halten zu müssen. Diese scheinen die Entwicklung sogar selbst zu bemerken und bieten den Zuschauern durch Angebote wie Video-on-Demand und Online-Mediatheken ihre Inhalte ebenfalls zeitunabhängig an (vgl. Ji 2008: 7). All dies spricht eigentlich für einen baldigen Untergang des klassischen Fernsehens.
