Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 1,3, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (Historisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Korruption in der Neueren und Neuesten Geschichte, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Zentrum dieser Arbeit steht die Frage, welche Rolle Korruption und die Debatten um Korruptionsvorwürfe im englischen Frühparlamentarismus der Ära Walpoles spielte, wobei der Fokus dabei insbesondere auf dem Zeitraum 1714-1742 liegt. Dazu soll unter anderem die These von Christine LANDFRIED überprüft werden, nach der aus dem Fehlen eines ausgeprägten Parteiensystems und der Notwendigkeit parlamentarischer Mehrheiten für die Regierungsfähigkeit des von der Krone berufenen Kabinetts ein ausgeprägtes Patronagewesen und systematische Bestechung von Parlamentariern resultierte. Es stellt sich also die Frage, inwieweit Korruption und korrupte Praktiken systemimmanente Phänomene sind; ob die Handlungsweise Walpoles lediglich Notwendigkeiten des politischen Systems widerspiegeln. Unter dem Begriff "politisches System" soll in der vorliegenden Untersuchung die englische Verfassun dieser Zeit, sowie die politische Landschaft der Zeit von 1714-1742 verstanden werden. Neben der parlamentarischen Dimension dieser These soll hier auch die Rolle der Korruption und Patronage auf Wahlkreisebene mit in den Blick einbezogen werden, denn ohne diese Betrachtung würde sonst ein wichtiges, wenn nicht gar konstitutives Element des Einflusses der Krone auf die Politik vernachlässigt werden. Um die Rahmenbedingungen des politischen Handelns in der Zeit Walpoles zu verstehen soll einleitend das politische System Englands im frühen 18. Jahrhundert erläutert werden. Dabei sollen die Verfassung und die wichtigsten politischen Institutionen, deren Funktionen und Bezug zueinander, erklärt werden.
