Die Philosophie der Lebenskunst gehört seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts zu den aktuellen Denkrichtungen, die nicht nur in Lehre und Forschung vertreten, sondern auch von einem breiteren Publikum wahrgenommen werden. In ihr geht es um ein gelungenes, schönes und glückliches Leben. Im Fokus des vorliegenden Buches stehen 'kritische' Perspektiven auf die Realisierung von Lebenskunst in spezifischen biographischen, sozialen und kulturellen Kontexten. Zu fragen ist: Wer übt wie Kritik woran und welche Motivationen und Ziele verfolgt er dabei? Diese Fragen werden mit Blick auf Individualität, soziale Beziehungen, kulturelle Strukturen, prekäre Lebensverhältnisse, therapeutische Praktiken, Bausteine für ein gutes Leben und gesellschaftliche Veränderungsprozesse je unterschiedlich beantwortet. Kritisch zu sehen ist, dass in der Debatte um die Lebenskunst bis heute ein aristokratisch-elitärer und ideologisierender Unterton mitschwingt. Sozialwissenschaftlich rücken mit diesem Aristokratismus der Lebenskunst Aspekte der Ungleichheit und der Benachteiligung ins Blickfeld. Dabei drängen sich Fragen auf, ob der an einer sozialen Elite orientierte Lebenskunstbegriff noch tragfähig ist; ob prekäre Verhältnisse Lebenskunst überhaupt zulassen; welche Kompetenzen für die Lebenskunst des, gewöhnlichen Lebens' bedeutsam sind und inwieweit eine 'kritische Lebenskunst' über die Philosophie hinaus human-, sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlicher Analysen und Strategien bedarf. Eine Wende von einer individualistisch-elitären zu einer demokratisch orientierten Richtung der Lebenskunst erscheint geboten: Dabei geht es einerseits um Haltungen und Fähigkeiten, die potentiell viele, vielleicht sogar alle Menschen in der Gestaltung ihres Lebens verwirklichen können. Und andererseits geht es auch um politische, soziale und kulturelle Rahmenbedingungen, die ein geglücktes Leben in der Moderne ermöglichen.
