In seinem Scheitern ist er Falladas »Kleinem Mann«, in seiner Fallhohe Doblins Franz Biberkopf ahnlich – doch in seiner Liebenswurdigkeit ist Kubinke beispiellos. »Der Mord an Georg Hermann war so grundlich, dass er heute noch wirkt.« — Rolf Vollmann Georg Hermann, Autor von uber zwei Dutzend Romanen – seine Geschichte uber Jettchen Gebert erschien in 120 Auflagen –, war seinerzeit so erfolgreich wie ein Thomas Mann. Seine Flucht vor den s fuhrte ihn dennoch nur bis Amsterdam, von wo er 1943 nach Auschwitz deportiert und ermordet wurde. Die Versuche, sein Werk der Nachkriegsleserschaft zu erschließen, scheiterten. Mit Kubinke hat er dem sprichwortlichen »kleinen Mann«, dem arbeitenden Traumer, der sein Herz am rechten Fleck tragt, ein Denkmal geschrieben. Das Berlin der Kaiserzeit ist der Hauptprotagonist in den Romanen Georg Hermanns. Er lasst die Stadt wachsen, die neuen Kieze breiten sich aus: Schoneberg, Wilmersdorf, Charlottenburg. An allen Orten ist die Stadt im Begriff »hochherrschaftlich« zu werden. Auch Emil Kubinke, der als Friseurgehilfe am 1. April 1908 – da beginnt die Geschichte und sie endet begleitet von den Jahreszeiten nicht einmal ein Jahr spater – aus der Provinz in die wachsende Metropole kommt und auf sein Gluck hofft, kennt diese Welt nur aus der Distanz: Ihm ist der Dienstboteneingang im »Gartenhaus« vorbehalten, wo er unter dem Dach mit seinem Kollegen Tesch wohnt. Im Vorderhaus hat der Friseur Ziedorn seinen florierenden Salon, verkauft sein Haarol »Ziedornin« und macht bei vermogenden Damen Hausbesuche. Kubinke sucht schuchtern und naiv und doch voller Begehren sein Gluck – auch in der Liebe. Er erprobt sie im Fruhling bei Hedwig und Emma, den Dienstmadchen im Haus, die eine drall, die andere schlank. Er findet es und wahnt sich am Ziel bei seiner rothaarigen Pauline aus der Beletage, mit der er sich im Grunewald »verlobt«. Doch Kubinke, arglos und nichtsahnend, wird von den Unterhaltsforderungen seiner Probelieben erpresst – fur das Leben in der Großstadt und dessen lockere Moralvorstellungen, ob im Burgertum oder im »Milljoh«, ist er nicht gewappnet. Ihm legt sich wie von selbst der Strick um den Hals. »Aber endlich, endlich und zum Schluß hoffe ich doch, mir die Gunst des Lesers zu erringen. Denn – da ja in meiner Geschichte viel geliebt wird, so wird mir viel verziehen werden.« (Georg Hermann im Vorwort)
