Die Schriften zu Kultur und Religion nehmen in Freuds Gesamtwerk einen besonderen Platz ein. Sie spiegeln sein Bemühen wieder, auch die sozialen und kulturellen Phänomene innerhalb des psychoanalytischen Interpretationsmodells zu erfassen. Viele seiner Zeitgenossen haben gegen dieses Bemühen Widerspruch erhoben und Freuds Schriften haben sowohl zu seinen Lebzeiten als auch seit seinem Tod einige Kritik ausgelöst. Im ersten Kapitel werden einführend einige Bemerkungen über Freuds persönliches Verhältnis zur Religion gemacht. Zudem wird die Frage geklärt, inwiefern die freudsche Kultur- und Religionskritik von seiner Psychoanalyse beeinflusst ist und es werden knapp die wichtigsten theoretischen Grundlagen der Psychoanalyse, die für das Vorhaben der vorliegenden Arbeit von Bedeutung sind, dargestellt. Anschließend werden im zweiten, dritten und vierten Kapitel in chronologischer Reihenfolge die Werke Totem und Tabu (1912-1913), Die Zukunft einer Illusion (1927) und Das Unbehagen in der Kultur (1930) behandelt. Anhand wichtiger Hauptfragestellungen soll dem Leser ein Überblick über den Inhalt des jeweiligen Werkes gegeben werden, sowie gleichzeitig weiterführende, tiefergehende Erklärungen hinsichtlich der freudschen Kultur- und Religionskritik. Es soll dabei an geeigneter Stelle nicht versäumt werden, einen kritischen Standpunkt einzunehmen und die Stringenz der freudschen Ausführungen zu hinterfragen. Freuds Art und Weise, Probleme der Kultur und der Religion darzustellen, kann nicht hingenommen werden, ohne die Frage nach seiner Methode aufzuwerfen. Dementsprechend soll im letzten Kapitel Freuds methodische Vorgehensweise untersucht und gleichzeitig bewertet werden. Damit
