Novela histórica - María Teresa Alarcón, Condesa de Cayaguanca, al enviudar toma como sirvienta a Olaya Beltrán sin el consentimiento del padre quien la busca por todos lados y por fin se entera que está al servicio de la Condesa, quien la trata mal con palabras despectivas debido a su humilde procedencia campesina. La noble promete al confesor enmendar su conducta, pero siempre reincide. El padre, Leandro Beltrán, visita a Olaya para informarle que su prometido ya le proporcionó fondos para la boda, pero ella los rechaza. La Condesa, aunque es fiel a los reyes destronados en España, rehúsa apoyar la dictadura militar entronizada en la República de El Redentor. El nuevo sacerdote confesor, Santiago Castelar, le indica que debe limpiar las estatuas de su altar y le manda a Leandro, su nuevo sacristán, para que las restaure. Mientras va al castillo de la condesa, un acérrimo secuaz de la dictadura lo detiene y lo tortura. El sacerdote logra sacarlo de la cárcel, pero se gana la enemistad del secuaz. Mateo, el hijo del sacristán viaja a Cayaguanca en unión de su hijo Joaquín, quien muere accidentalmente a manos de los soldados y éstos perecen a manos de Mateo. Éste se refugia en el castillo condal con la aceptación de la condesa. Castelar le confiesa a Leandro que él no es sacerdote y está tramitando su retiro para volver España. Pero, antes de partir debe participar en los funerales del antiguo sacristán asesinado por la dictadura. El comandante del batallón prohíbe la participación del pueblo de Cayaguanca en el funeral, pero todo el mundo participa en él y el ejército mata a la mayoría de los participantes, incluido el párroco. La condesa se enfurece por el asesinato de su paisano y en unión de las viudas y huérfanas y parientes de las víctimas crean la Operación Cascabel. Su objetivo es castrar al secuaz quien es ahora comandante del batallón. Olaya es adoptada por la condesa y luego se ofrece a realizar los planes de venganza, los cuales ejecuta brillantemente en unión de sus amigas. Al recobrarse, el castrado coronel ordena la cacería y ejecución de las conspiradoras. Éstas, con el apoyo económico de la condesa huyen al vecino país de Hibueras y luego a Europa. Los perseguidores mueren en el intento de capturarlas y el comandante se suicida, temeroso de que su vergonzoso estado sea conocido por sus colegas en el ejército. La viuda rehúsa aceptar la herencia y la distribuye entre los nueve hijos ilegítimos del coronel. Su hijo legítimo se niega a seguir la carrera militar y luego se une a su madre en Francia. Luego él se enamora de la castradora de su padre y sin ambos saberlo se casa con ella. La condesa se muda a España con su hija adoptiva y su yerno; mientras su nieto, Vicente se gradúa de médico y vuelve a El Redentor. Rayo, o Rayon, vuelve con él.
