La ville de Bleiberg est en pleine agitation. About the Author: Harold MacGrath, quelquefois écrit McGrath (4 septembre 1871 - 30 octobre 1932) fut un écrivain américain à succès, auteur de romans et nouvelles ainsi que scénariste, natif de Syracuse, New York. Il commença par rédiger des articles et des reportages pour le quotidien Syracuse Herald, travail qu'il continua jusqu'à la publication de son premier livre, une romance intitulée Arms and the Woman, en 1889. Selon le New York Times, son deuxième livre, The Puppet Crown, le plaça au septième rang des auteurs les plus lus aux États-Unis pour l'année 1901. Dès lors, la voie de MacGrath était toute tracée: il écrirait des romans populaires, des histoires d'amour, d'aventure, de mystère, d'espionnage et autres sujets de ce genre, publiant, en moyenne, plus d'un livre par an. Trois de ses romans allaient être inclus sur la liste des dix livres ayant atteint le taux de vente le plus élevé pour l'année de leur publication. En même temps, il produisait régulièrement des histoires pour les principaux magazines américains, comme le Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal et Red Book. Plusieurs de ses romans parurent sous forme de feuilletons dans des magazines à grande circulation, et cela jusqu'à sa mort, survenue en 1932. En 1912, Harold MacGrath fut l'un des premiers auteurs à devenir célèbre en Amérique pour sa contribution directe à l'industrie cinématographique, lorsque l'American Film Company l'invita à écrire le scénario pour un court métrage, genre Western, intitulé The Vengeance That Failed. Dix-huit de ses quarante romans, ainsi que trois de ses nouvelles, furent aussi portés sur le grand écran. Il rédigea également le scénario pour quatre films. D'autre part, trois de ses livres furent adaptés pour le théâtre et très bien reçus à Broadway.
