Les premiers romans d'Agnon, Ce qui est tordu deviendra droit et la Dot de la fiancee decrivent la vie de la ville de Buczacz durant le XIXesiecle. Le realisme et la poesie, la naivete et l'ironie s'entrelacent autour de quelques heros gouailleurs et malchanceux, dont les aventures sont integrees a la vie d'un peuple rythmant son existence joyeuse sur la loi de Dieu tout en buvant jusqu'a la lie les miseres de l'exil. La dot de la fiancee (dont nous proposons la premiere traduction en francais, traduction integrale - la version americaine de reference, revisee par Agnon, est amputee de son dernier chapitre qui est un long poeme) est considere comme le premier grand ouvrage d'Agnon. Rabbi Yudel, le heros, hassid pauvre et savant, qui prie regulierement et consacre son temps a l'etude, qui connait les commandements et les benedictions qui conviennent aux lieux et aux circonstances, les versets du Talmud qu'il convient de citer pour justifier une decision, les preceptes selon lesquels l'homme sage doit se regler, est arrache a sa routine par un commandement imperieux: ses filles sont en age de se marier et il doit, decision du rebbe hassidique de la ville (ce rebbe est un personnage historique, le rebbe d'Apta, auquel Buber consacre une partie de ses Recits hassidiques), aller solliciter les juifs des villages de la region pour reunir la somme necessaire a les doter et a organiser des mariages decents. Rabbi Yudel va donc parcourir le petit monde de la juiverie galicienne, rencontrer des personnages hauts en couleurs, des situations inedites, les aborder avec une tete bien pleine d'enonces sapientiaux a pretention morale mais certainement mal faite pour les accorder a un referentiel nouveau a plus d'un titre: le contemplatif se frotte aux hommes d'action, decouvre la pluralite du monde, l'injustice ou, plutot l'indifference a la justice et, malgre cela, finit par y prendre gout et a du mal a retourner chez lui. Avec les aventures de ce Candide parlant hebreu (mais ressentant en yiddisch), Agnon a ecrit un roman picaresque extremement drole, dans lequel il fait preuve d'une grande virtuosite litteraire - on pense sans difficulte au Thomas Mann des Buddenbrock - mais aussi discretement amer, ou il raconte aussi, a la lumiere de l'apres-coup, la lente implosion de la Galicie juive, les mille petits details qui marquent son lent delabrement, bien avant que son acte de deces officiel ne soit etabli.
