I OÙ PIERRE DAVENNE APPREND UN TERRIBLE ACCIDENT C'était par une chaude soirée d'été; à l'accablante ardeur de la journée succédait une nuit lourde et pleine d'orage; de longues nuées noires s'étendaient sur le ciel gris, éteignant les dernières lueurs rouges du soleil couchant. En même temps que la nuit, le silence envahissait le vieux quartier du Marais. Neuf heures et demie venaient de sonner; la rue Payenne était déserte. Les rares boutiques étaient fermées, les hauts contrevents des vieux hôtels étaient clos. De la rue du Parc-Royal à la rue des Francs-Bourgeois une seule maison avait encore ses fenêtres éclairées. Petite maison d'apparence discrète, construite au milieu d'un jardin touffu, - arraché dans une vente au parc du grand hôtel voisin, - dans l'ombre des arbres séculaires, elle paraissait le nid frais et fleuri d'un ménage heureux. C'était une de ces constructions modernes qui, cherchant à corriger un style, n'a plus même l'originalité du sien. Élevée sur un sous-sol qui servait aux cuisines, on arrivait au rez-de-chaussée par un perron sur la grille duquel se tordaient les plantes grimpantes de saison. Le rez-de-chaussée se composait d'un vaste salon, d'un fumoir et d'une salle à manger. C'est de cette dernière pièce que jaillissait la lumière, qui, tamisée par le feuillage des arbres, étalait ses arabesques lumineuses sur le pavé noir de la rue.
About the Author: BOUVIER Alexis ( 1836 - 1892 ) Louis Alexis Bouvier voit le jour en 1836 à Paris. C'est un romancier populaire et auteur dramatique qui est ciseleur en bronze jusqu'en 1863. Il fit des chansons dont quelques unes, comme La canaille ou Les Trois lettres d'un marin, ont eu un vif succès. On lui doit quelques récits terribles La Femme du mort (1875), Amour, misère et Cie (1878) ou Les Créanciers de l'échafaud (1879). Il composa aussi des livrets d'opérettes, des vaudevilles et acquit une grande réputation par ses romans-feuilletons qui dénotent une imagination féconde, selon le dictionnaire Larousse du XXe siècle (Édition de Paul Augé de 1928).
