Nous regarderons alors ses organes en exercice; nous essayerons de découvrir de quelle façon elle recueille le pollen des fleurs, comment elle l'élabore, par quelle opération intérieure elle le change en cire ou en miel. Nous observerons ensuite les procédés par lesquels elle bâtit, assemble, varie et emplit ses cellules; et nous tâcherons d'indiquer les lois chimiques et les règles mathématiques d'après lesquelles les matériaux qu'elle emploie sont fabriqués et équilibrés. Nous voulons savoir comment, étant donnés un jardin et des abeilles, une ruche se produit, quels sont tous les pas de l'opération intermédiaire, et quelles forces générales agissent à chacun des pas de l'opération. Vous tirerez de là, si bon vous semble, des conclusions non seulement sur les abeilles et leurs ruches, mais sur tous les insectes, et peut-être aussi sur tous les animaux.
