NOTICE. Cette comédie, qui a eu plus de succès que toutes celles que Corneille a fait représenter avant le Cid[1], est curieuse à divers titres, et principalement pour l'histoire du théâtre. D'abord c'est dans cette pièce qu'il a substitué pour la première fois, comme il en fait lui-même la remarque[2], une suivante à la nourrice traditionnelle de la vieille comédie qu'il avait fait figurer dans Mélite et dans la Veuve. A partir de ce moment, l'acteur Alison, dont on ignore le nom véritable, et qui remplissait sous le masque cet emploi de nourrice, ne joua plus jusqu'à sa retraite que certains rôles de vieilles femmes ridicules. En jetant les yeux sur la planche qui se trouve en tête de la Veuve, dans les éditions de 1660 et 1664, on est frappé de l'air masculin de la nourrice, et l'on se demande si le dessinateur n'a pas voulu représenter le visage ou le masque d'Alison. Ensuite notre poëte, qui a dit spirituellement dans la préface de Clitandre, en parlant de la scène, dont il abandonne le choix au lecteur: Où vous l'aurez une fois placée, elle s'y tiendra, nous présente ici, au premier acte et au quatrième, un lieu non-seulement très-bien déterminé, mais réel, la Galerie du Palais, parfaitement connue de tous ses auditeurs, qui durent sans aucun doute prendre grand plaisir à ce spectacle, car aujourd'hui encore ce moyen de succès, bien qu'on en ait fort abusé, manque rarement son effet. Pierre Corneille, aussi appelé le Grand Corneille ou Corneille l'aîné, né le 6 juin 1606 à Rouen et mort le 1er octobre 1684 à Paris (paroisse Saint-Roch), est un dramaturge et poète français du XVIIe siècle. Issu d'une famille de la bourgeoisie de robe, Pierre Corneille, après des études de droit, occupa des offices d'avocat à Rouen tout en se tournant vers la littérature, comme bon nombre de diplômés en droit de son temps. Il écrivit d'abord des comédies comme Mélite, La Place royale, L'Illusion comique, et des tragi-comédies Clitandre (vers 1630) et en 1637, Le Cid, qui fut un triomphe, malgré les critiques de ses rivaux et des théoriciens. Il avait aussi donné dès 1634-35 une tragédie mythologique (Médée), mais ce n'est qu'en 1640 qu'il se lança dans la voie de la tragédie historique - il fut le dernier des poètes dramatiques de sa génération à le faire -, donnant ainsi ce que la postérité considéra comme ses chefs-d'oeuvre: Horace, Cinna, Polyeucte, Rodogune, Héraclius et Nicomède.
