El libro cuenta la historia de Marcus, legionario romano en Hispania.Un día, en una batalla, cae herido y son los bárbaros del pueblo contra el que estaba combatiendo los que le socorren y curan sus heridas.Marcus pierde la memoria; olvida quien era y todo lo que había sucedido. Con el tiempo, pasa a ser un habitante más del pueblo de Fuentebrenniosa. En su nueva vida conoce a Lidia, una mujer olcade. Se casa con ella y tienen una hija a la que llaman Lisístrata, en honor a la mujer que propuso a las mujeres de Grecia un plan para acabar con la guerra. En Fuentebrenniosa era conocido como adiestrador de gatos, porque enseñó a los habitantes los beneficios de tener gatos en los hogares. Los olcades temían a estos felinos porque los consideraban un signo de muerte, mientras que para los romanos eran signos de victoria.Nadie conocía el pasado de Marcus, excepto su mujer que mantiene el secreto por miedo de que le descubran y lo devuelvan a la legión. Sin embargo, deciden educar a Lisístrata como una patricia del Imperio Romano. Le enseñan la lengua latina que aprende a hablar y a escribir a la perfección.Cuando Lidia muere, Marcus siente una pena profunda, ya que le consideraba como la única persona que le había hecho feliz y que le había dado ganas de vivir. Lo más sencillo para él hubiese sido quedarse en Fuentebrenniosa y casarse con otra mujer olcade. Pero, en su opinión, ninguna mujer podría superar a Lidia, así que, decide romper con todo, quemar el hogar en el que vivió con su familia y marcharse con su hija a Segóbriga. Allí se hace comerciante de lapis specularis, el espejuelo que los romanos usan en las ventanas, y se hace rico. Decide construir una casa en la que vivir con Lisístrata, hasta entonces su hija ingresará en el templo para continuar con su educación. Allí se hace amiga de Julia, una de sus maestras. Con el tiempo, viendo la relación de amistad entre las dos, Marcus decide llevarla a su casa en calidad de domina. En este momento confluyen las dos historias paralelas: la del soldado romano y la de la sacerdotisa que ha dejado el templo de Valeria para venirse a Segóbriga.
