Publicada en 1905, LA HORDA forma parte de la serie de obras que Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867-1928) alumbró durante los años en que fue diputado republicano y en las que expresó de forma más directa sus inquietudes sociales. Preparada minuciosamente por Blasco, que modeló todos y cada uno de sus personajes a partir de tipos reales, y ambientada en Madrid, la novela narra los infructuosos esfuerzos de su protagonista, Isidro Maltrana -individuo con talento, pero lastrado por su origen social-, por dejar atrás una existencia marcada por la explotación, la marginación y la ignorancia, y determinada por una sociedad que sólo abre a las víctimas la posibilidad de dejar de serlo a cambio de sumarse incondicionalmente a las filas de los verdugos.
About the Author: Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (Valencia, 1867 - Menton, 1928) fue un escritor y político español, uno de los autores naturalistas más populares de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Estudió derecho, aunque su carrera se orientó pronto hacia la escritura y también hacia la política. Firme partidario y defensor de la república, fue detenido y condenado. Ocupó puestos en el Congreso de los diputados en dos ocasiones. Si bien gran parte de su obra refleja a la sociedad valenciana de la época, La barraca, Cañas y barro, el gran éxito a nivel internacional le llegó tras la escritura de Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis (1916), obra que se vendió en todo el mundo y que fue adaptada al cine en 1921 por Rex Ingram y en 1961 por Vincent Minelli. Blasco Ibáñez no participó de movimientos literarios en su época, dedicado a sus propias iniciativas políticas, desarrolló una corriente denominada blasquismo, no siempre del agrado del gobierno, provocando su exilio en diversos países como Italia o Francia. En uno de sus viajes a Argentina decidió fundar una colonia de valencianos en Cervantes, Corrientes, donde se inició el cultivo del arroz en regadío en el país sudamericano. Desafortunadamente, la colonia no prosperó y Blasco Ibáñez volvió a Europa. Además de Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis, otras obras de Blasco Ibáñez han sido llevadas al cine, como Sangre y Arena, Mare Nostrum, El torrente o Entre naranjos, así como Los muertos andan y La maja desnuda. A destacar también las adaptaciones televisivas de sus obras más regionalistas, como La barraca o Cañas y barrroen los años 70 y, más recientemente, Entre naranjos o Arroz y tartana. Vicente Blasco Ibáñez murió en Francia en 1928 y no fue hasta cuatro años después de su muerte, bajo el gobierno de la II República, que sus restos llegaron a su Valencia natal.
