SINOPSIS:

Madrugada del día 26 de junio de 1582. Grupo de islas Terceras, a seis leguas al sur de la isla de San Miguel.

Desde la tarde del día 22, las escaramuzas entre la flota española, bajo el mando del almirante Álvaro de Bazán, y la corsaria francesa a las órdenes del condotiero Felipe Strozzi, han sido continuas y ambas escuadras se vigilan desconfiadas.

La incorporación del reino de Portugal a la Corona española, tras la muerte sin dejar sucesor del rey Enrique I, no ha sido pacífica. Don Antonio, pretendiente al trono, cuenta con la implícita ayuda de Francia e Inglaterra que temen el aumento del poder de Felipe II.

La Corona española se había anexionado el reino de Portugal tras la batalla de Alcántara, cuando las tropas comandadas por Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, tercer duque de Alba, derrotaron a las del prior de Crato, pero las islas Terceras, que son un importante enclave para el abastecimiento de la flota de las Indias, son fieles a don Antonio, con la excepción de las islas de San Miguel y Santa María, conocidas como las islas de los Azores, que ofrecieron sumisión al rey español.Álvaro de Bazán tiene el mandato del rey de someter a las Terceras, pero sabe que el tiempo juega en su contra, pues recibieron la orden de partir precipitadamente, sin poder completar la flota y, además, tuvieron que soportar un duro temporal desde su partida de Lisboa, en el que se perdieron algunas naos.

La escuadra de Strozzi supera a la española en una proporción de tres a uno; la de Bazán, mermada en naos y con menos infantería de la prevista, parece dirigirse hacia el desastre: una inminente derrota que pondrá en peligro a la flota de las Indias y la misma integridad del reino.Guillem Esteve, arcabucero del tercio del maestre de campo general, don Lope de Figueroa, y superviviente de la batalla de Salga, está embarcado en el galeón San Mateo cuando este, cerca del mediodía, de forma inexplicable, se lanza en solitario contra las naos enemigas.

Parecen abocados a una derrota sin paliativos y, en los momentos previos al combate, el recuerdo de la mujer a la que ama, y con la que espera desposarse en Nueva España, aumentan su angustia ante la posibilidad de no volverla a ver. Cerca de dos años antes, Guillem se encontraba en viaje de regreso a su isla natal, en un intento de encontrar algún vestigio de su familia, pero, al tocar tierras españolas y saber del conflicto, su sentido del deber le impulsó a enrolarse de nuevo en el ejército; el periplo se ha tornado tortuoso.La crueldad de la guerra y un oscuro personaje que se cruza en su vida harán que Guillem se cuestione todo aquello en lo que creía.

El AUTOR:
David Rotger, Palma de Mallorca (1960), licenciado en Psicología y diplomado en Turismo. Su vida profesional ha estado muy vinculada al mundo de las emergencias. Ha sido profesor en preparación psicológica y en liderazgo de equipos, en diferentes servicios de bomberos del territorio nacional.

Es miembro fundador de SEPADEM: Sociedad Española de Psicología Aplicada a Desastres, Urgencias y Emergencias. En la actualidad ocupa el puesto de sargento de prefectura, en el servicio de bomberos del "Consell de Mallorca."
