Una moneta che passa di mano in mano. Un oggetto misterioso che sembra uscito da una storia alla Indiana Jones. Andrea Camilleri ritorna al suo genere piu classico con un grande romanzo storico, “La moneta di Akragas”: un affresco che ha gli ingredienti dell’avventura e dell’excursus nella grande storia. Tutto inizia con una moneta ritrovata intorno al 406 a.C. quando l’antica citta di Agrigento (Akragas) viene presa dai Cartaginesi. Kalebas, mercenario ai servigi degli spartani, sfugge da un terribile eccidio portando con se un sacchetto di monete d’oro, ricavo di tanti mesi di lavoro. Le monete sono strane e portano delle strane effigie sui lati. Kalebas muore morso da una vipera, ma prima di esalare l’ultimo respiro sparge le monete scagliandole lontane da se. Questo e solo l’incipit di mille squarci temporali in cui Camilleri ci conduce, anche se lo scorcio e sempre quello della sua amata Sicilia. Ci ritroviamo infatti nel 1908, all’alba del nuovo giorno dopo il devastante terremoto di Messina. Altra citta della Sicilia e altra epoca, ma ugualmente morte e distruzione attendono il lettore. Tra le rovine della citta distrutta ricompaiono pero misteriosamente le monete di Kalebas e dopo mille viaggi, arrivano tra le mani dello zar che coltiva la passione della numismatica. In un’altra parte dell’isola, solo un anno dopo, uno zappatore scavando la terra si trova tra le mani un’altra moneta. Il povero uomo pensa di aver trovato una fortuna, ma e solo l’inizio di una serie di sfortunati eventi. La moneta sembra vivere di vita propria, impossessata da un’anima che sfugge al destino che i suoi possessori vogliono attribuirle. Gli oggetti del libro scritto dall’autore di Montalbano, sfuggono, si nascondono, modificano la realta e le monete faranno del bene se chi le trova e di animo buono, contrariamente possono diventare strumento di malvagita in mano a uomini cattivi. Cio che e materiale, sembra dirci Camilleri, e effimero, dipende da come lo usiamo e comunque non possiamo portarlo con noi nell’aldila quindi e meglio essere ricchi di buoni sentimenti piuttosto che di tante monete. Tragicita e fuga dal potere, generosita e esilaranti scene a cui ci ha abituati l’autore siciliano fanno di “La moneta di Akragas” soprattutto una fiaba dai toni gialli.
