Catalina salio de su choza y se adelanto hasta la orilla del bosque, por un sendero que, dando varios circuitos, conducia a la calzada de la aldea de Orsdael. Aunque caminase muy ligero, iba mirando al suelo como una persona cuyo espiritu esta oprimido por el peso de alguna inquietud. Y hasta de cuando en cuando meneaba la cabeza, volviendo los ojos hacia el castillo, con expresion de tristeza. Pensaba, sin duda, en la suerte de Marta Sweerts, en las sangrientas afrentas que tenia que sufrir todos los dias, en la inutilidad de los esfuerzos para descubrir el impenetrable secreto. Cuando llego a la carretera, advirtio al intendente que iba unos cien pasos delante de ella. Esto la alegro porque no habia visto a Marta desde hacia una semana. Esperaba que si podia entrar en conversacion con Mathys, sabria noticias de su amiga, y quiza esta ocasion le permitiria decirle algunas palabras en su favor. Henri o Hendrik Conscience (diciembre 3, 1812 a septiembre 10, 1883) fue un autor belga. Es considerado como el pionero de la literatura de lengua neerlandesa de Flandes, escribiendo en un momento en Belgica estuvo dominada por el frances entre las clases altas, en la literatura y el gobierno. Conscience lucho como un revolucionario belga en 1830 y fue un escritor notable en el estilo del romanticismo popular en el siglo 19. El es mejor conocido por su novela nacionalista romantico, De Leeuw van Vlaenderen (1838), inspirada en la victoria de una milicia campesina flamenca sobre caballeros franceses en el 1.302 Batalla de las Espuelas de Oro durante la guerra franco-flamenca. A lo largo de su carrera, publico mas de 100 novelas y novelas cortas y alcanzo gran popularidad. Despues de su muerte, con la decadencia del romanticismo, su obra se convirtio en menos de moda, pero aun son considerados como clasicos de la literatura flamenca. Hendrik Conscience, novelista belga y escritor de relatos breves a quien se atribuye el desarrollo de la novela flamenca. Nacio en Amberes, de padre frances y madre flamenca, y escribio principalmente en flamenco. Sus textos, imaginativos y sensibles, reflejan no solo su temperamento romantico sino tambien una solida vision moral. Se le ha criticado por su exceso de sentimentalismo. Conscience trabajo primero como maestro, pero tras un breve periodo en el ejercito entro en la vida literaria de Amberes, escribiendo primero poesia y mas tarde novelas historicas como En el ano de los milagros (1837), un retrato de la vida del siglo XVI. Su obra maestra es la epopeya El leon de Flandes (1838), donde narra la victoria de los flamencos sobre los gobernantes franceses de su pais. Esta obra esta considerada como una de las principales novelas historicas del romanticismo europeo. Sus novelas posteriores revelan un tratamiento mas realista de la vida rural y urbana."
