Cuando llegó a la carretera, advirtió al intendente que iba unos cien pasos delante de ella. Esto la alegró porque no había visto a Marta desde hacía una semana. Esperaba que si podía entrar en conversación con Mathys, sabría noticias de su amiga, y quizá esta ocasión le permitiría decirle algunas palabras en su favor. Henri o Hendrik Conscience (diciembre 3, 1812 a septiembre 10, 1883) fue un autor belga. Es considerado como el pionero de la literatura de lengua neerlandesa de Flandes, escribiendo en un momento en Bélgica estuvo dominada por el francés entre las clases altas, en la literatura y el gobierno. Conscience luchó como un revolucionario belga en 1830 y fue un escritor notable en el estilo del romanticismo popular en el siglo 19. Sus textos, imaginativos y sensibles, reflejan no sólo su temperamento romántico sino también una sólida visión moral. Se le ha criticado por su exceso de sentimentalismo. Conscience trabajó primero como maestro, pero tras un breve periodo en el ejército entró en la vida literaria de Amberes, escribiendo primero poesía y más tarde novelas históricas como En el año de los milagros (1837), un retrato de la vida del siglo XVI. Su obra maestra es la epopeya El león de Flandes (1838), donde narra la victoria de los flamencos sobre los gobernantes franceses de su país. Esta obra está considerada como una de las principales novelas históricas del romanticismo europeo. Sus novelas posteriores revelan un tratamiento más realista de la vida rural y urbana.
