About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

«I could never have imagined thatsomeone would help me from such a distant time...».

Forgotten for centuries, overshadowed by male artists to whom her genius paintings were attributed to, Sofonisba Anguissola was an extraordinary painter who, without pictorial training or academic knowledge of the human anatomy, specialized in portraits and self-portraits; she achieved great success in her time and, while living in Spain, was linked to the court of Philip II.

In The Possible Novel, José María Merino narrates the life of this painter with great historical rigor, but also with all the levity that writing fiction can offer. The story of this dazzling woman and her time is intertwined with two others set in current times: that of the writer himself who, during confinement, writes a diary in which he records those uncertain days and how the seed of fascination for Sofonisba is living deep within him; and that of a librarian who finds refuge in the Renaissance painter which helps her overcome a heartbreak.

In this novel the two eras are masterfully joined, current times and the Renaissance, reality with imagination, biography with autobiography and fiction, and literature with art.
