Un professeur de l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, ayant acces aux rayons de la Bibliotheque de la Sorbonne, garde ce souvenir datant des annees 1980: L'un des murs de l'etage des theses etait couvert d'un rayonnage rempli de livres relies en bleu azur. C'etaient les theses de l'Universite de Lund. Cette surface d'un bleu azur parfait etait troublee, toutefois, par un volume devenu noir et litteralement hirsute a force d'avoir ete manipule: c'etait un volume que je connaissais bien, La parole et le marbre. Redigee en francais, la these de doctorat que Jesper Svenbro a soutenue en avril 1976 a l'Universite de Lund (Suede) a connu une diffusion certaine grace aux pratiques d'echange entre universites. Epuisee depuis longtemps, elle renait maintenant de ses cendres. De quoi s'agit-il ? Svenbro se propose d'y dresser la genealogie du poete ou, plus precisement, de repondre a la question de savoir pourquoi les Grecs ont choisi le terme poietes pour designer l'auteur de chants ou de poemes, etant donne que ce terme signifie normalement producteur, artisan. Comme si les poetes grecs anticipaient la formule de Walter Benjamin, der Autor als Produzent. Pour mener son entreprise a bien, Svenbro procede a une enquete sur la facon dont les Grecs se sont representes l'origine du chant ou du poeme, d'abord chez Homere, ou l'aede ne se considere pas comme l'auteur de son chant, qui lui vient d'une divinite. Pour le poete choral - qu'il s'appelle Simonide ou Pindare -, composant ses odes sur commande et exigeant une remuneration en recompense, il devient en revanche urgent de se poser comme leur auteur au sens juridique du terme afin de pouvoir figurer comme partie du contrat etabli entre commanditaire et poete. C'est dans cette perspective que Svenbro nous invite a comprendre les metaphores artisanales de la poesie chorale comme les traces d'une situation ou le poete devient l'artisan de ses compositions et, en tant que tel, digne d'une remuneration. La poesie, langage desormais savamment travaille, n'est pas une effusion spontanee mais un objet fabrique, une architecture, un monument - a l'instar du Tresor des Atheniens a Delphes.
