L'ouvrage de Jean Laude, magistralement documente et riche de references aux " arts premiers ", analyse les rapports complexes entre la peinture francaise et l'art africain au debut du siecle dernier. Au terme de son etude, l'auteur evoque la fameuse declaration de Picasso: " L'art negre ? Connais pas ". Il precise: " Il n'y a pas d'art negre, mais une manifestation du genie humain qui, a la suite des circonstances, s'est exprimee et developpee en Afrique ". Jean Laude regle ainsi son sort au mythe du masque fang qui, selon Vlaminck, aurait, a la fois, engendre le cubisme et favorise la naissance du fauvisme. Il ne nie certes pas l'influence que l'Afrique exerca sur les peintres entre 1905 et 1914 -annees decisives -, mais il insiste surtout sur l'idee que la fascination et la passion pour l'" art negre " furent d'autant plus vives qu'elles repondaient a la curiosite esthetique de quelques peintres capables, a l'epoque, de saisir et d'integrer dans leurs propres recherches picturales les caracteristiques formelles des statuettes et des masques africains. Pres de quarante ans apres sa premiere edition, le livre de Jean Laude temoigne d'une perspicacite particuliere au regard des questions cruciales que posent aujourd'hui encore, et sans doute plus que jamais, les relations entre l'art contemporain occidental et les societes post-coloniales: " La vie moderne, la necessite des echanges et des communications exigent que tout un secteur de l'activite humaine soit normalise, standardise. [...] Provisoirement, le temps d'une adaptation que l'on imagine fort courte, ne sont conserves que les aspects, de plus en plus exterieurs, folklorisants, de ce qui faisait la specificite des cultures: de leurs modes, de vie, de leurs coutumes, de leurs arts, voire meme de leur pensee ". Cette reflexion premonitoire de Jean Laude confere a l'ouvrage sa veritable dimension humaniste et universaliste, loin de tout ethnocentrisme et dans le souci permanent de percevoir et de reconnaitre pleinement l'autre dans et avec sa difference.
