Cette peste écarlate, ainsi nommée car elle provoquait une coloration rouge de la peau, a totalement bouleversé l'ordre naturel et a quasiment rayé l'homme de la surface du globe. Seuls quelques individus, mystérieusement épargnés, ont survécu à la pandémie et ont réussi à recréer une forme de société, sans passé et sans culture. Un vieillard, interrogé par ses petits-enfants, tente de faire comprendre l'ancien monde à des êtres incapables de se figurer celui-ci. Représentant d'une forme d'intellectualité désormais incongrue, ayant sombré lui-même dans une demi-sénilité, l'ex-professeur James Howard Smith évoque un monde englouti, sa miraculeuse survie, l'effroi de la solitude jusqu'à sa rencontre avec la tribu des Chauffeurs, la difficile soumission à des êtres dépourvus de toute intelligence et régnant désormais en brutes... Mais un espoir subsiste: dans une grotte, Smith a entreposé des ouvrages, vestiges de la civilisation autrefois triomphante, et la clé de l'alphabet, afin qu'un jour, un homme relève de ses cendres la puissance de l'esprit humain.
About the Author: Jack London, né John Griffith Chaney le 12 janvier 1876 à San Francisco et mort le 22 novembre 1916 à Glen Ellen, Californie, est un écrivain américain dont les thèmes de prédilection sont l'aventure et la nature sauvage. Il a écrit L'Appel de la forêt et plus de cinquante autres nouvelles et romans connus. Il tire aussi de ses lectures et de sa propre vie de misère l'inspiration pour de nombreux ouvrages très engagés et à coloration socialiste, bien que cet aspect-là de son oeuvre soit généralement négligé. Il a été l'un des premiers Américains à faire fortune dans la littérature. Naissance et enfance (1876-1885) Jack London est né le 12 janvier 1876 à San Francisco, en Californie, aux États-Unis. La maison dans laquelle il est né, au numéro 615 Third Street, a été détruite lors du séisme de 1906. Une plaque y a été posée en 1953 par la société historique de Californie (California Historical Society). La mère de Jack est Flora Wellman. De nombreux biographes, dont Clarice Stasz, écrivent que le père probable de Jack aurait été l'astrologue William Chaney. Cependant, on ne peut pas l'affirmer car le séisme de 1906 à San Francisco a détruit la plupart des registres de la ville. William Chaney aurait abandonné Flora quelques mois avant qu'elle n'accouche. Il la chassa du domicile avant de partir, car elle refusait l'avortement [8][réf. incomplète]. Flora tenta alors de se suicider deux fois. En raison d'une grave maladie suivant l'accouchement, Flora ne put pas s'occuper de son fils. Une ancienne esclave du nom de Virginia Alenzo Prentiss devint la nourrice de l'enfant, et peu à peu, la figure de la mère pour John Chaney. Flora épouse, le 7 septembre 1876 un ancien combattant de la guerre de Sécession devenu veuf, John London, que tout le monde surnomme Jack. John Chaney adopte le nom de famille de son beau-père, ainsi que son surnom; dès lors, il porte le nom de Jack London.
