Quand nous eûmes fini de déjeuner, maît' Lormeau, notre hôte, un des plus gros fermiers du Perche, nous invita à visiter son cellier. - Vous allez voir une chose rare, une drôle de chose, ben drôle ! nous dit-il. Ce qui était drôle surtout, c'était cette idée bizarre qui lui avait poussé, tout à coup, après boire, et un jour d'ouverture de chasse, où toutes les minutes sont comptées. Nous aurions mieux aimé retourner à la poursuite des perdreaux et des lièvres. Mais il était entêté, le père Lormeau; de plus, son entêtement naturel se compliquait, en cet instant, d'une légère griserie. Malgré notre visible mécontentement, il insista, il exigea, et force nous fut d'en passer par où il voulait. - Vous regretterez point d'avoir vu ça ! ne cessait de répéter le bonhomme, en nous conduisant au cellier... parce que c'est une chose tout à fait drôle... Des perdreaux, des lièvres, y en a toujours... Mais le gibier que je vas vous montrer, personne dans le pays, ni ailleurs, ni nulle part, ne peut se vanter d'avoir son pareil !... Ah ! dame ! non.
About the Author: Octave Mirbeau, né le 16 février 1848 à Trévières (Calvados) et mort le 16 février 1917 à Paris, est un écrivain, critique d'art et journaliste français. Il connaît une célébrité européenne et de grands succès populaires, tout en étant également apprécié et reconnu par les avant-gardes littéraires et artistiques, ce qui n'est pas commun. Journaliste influent et fort bien rémunéré, critique d'art défenseur des avant-gardes, pamphlétaire redouté, Octave Mirbeau est aussi un romancier novateur, qui a contribué à l'évolution du genre romanesque, et un dramaturge, à la fois classique et moderne, qui a triomphé sur toutes les grandes scènes du monde. Mais, après sa mort, il traverse pendant un demi-siècle une période de purgatoire: il est visiblement trop dérangeant pour la classe dirigeante, tant sur le plan littéraire et esthétique que sur le plan politique et social. Littérairement incorrect, il est inclassable, il fait fi des étiquettes, des théories et des écoles, et il étend à tous les genres littéraires sa contestation radicale des institutions culturelles; également politiquement incorrect, farouchement individualiste et libertaire, il incarne une figure d'intellectuel critique, potentiellement subversif et irrécupérable, selon l'expression de Jean-Paul Sartre dans Les Mains sales.
