Haïti années 1978-2004 - Rachel Assali, fille de Rudolph Assali, un grand homme d'affaires d'origine palestinienne et de Rebecca Berthold, est issue de la haute bourgeoisie de Pétion-Ville, a 25 ans et n'est toujours pas mariée contrairement à toutes les demoiselles de la famille. La chambre de commerce dont il fait partie organise souvent de fastueuses fêtes et c'est au cours de l'une d'entre elles, chez Laurent Schomberg et son épouse Amanda, des amis intimes de ses parents, que la jeune femme va faire la connaissance de Charles Lindsay; le séduisant diplomate, Chargé d'affaires de l'ambassade américaine à Port-au-Prince qui assure l'intérim au poste d'ambassa- deur, car le titulaire de ce poste a été victime d'une crise cardiaque qui le force à faire une très longue convalescence. Elle semble ne pas être indifférente à la cour que lui fait le jeune homme tombé amoureux d'elle dès le premier jour de leur rencontre. Mais, Charly découvre très vite que l'attitude un peu froide que lui oppose Rachel, qui pourtant lui rend ses sentiments, est liée à un terrible secret. Rachel est une promise aux loas du panthéon vaudou. Elle est mystique. À vingt mille lieux du syncrétisme religieux qui a cours dans l'île, Charly se croit assez fort pour vaincre toutes les adversités.
