No sé si he dicho en la primera parte de estos verídicos apuntes que Luis Portal, mi sensato, cuco y oportunista condiscípulo, era bastante feo y desgarbado, lo cual probablemente influía mucho en su manera de entender la vida y en su intransigencia para con los sueños, las ilusiones, la poesía, la pasión y demás cosas bonitas que dan interés a nuestro existir. Tenía Portal el cuerpo cuadradote y macizo; las manos anchas y mal puestas; la pierna corta; la cabeza bien desarrollada, pero redonda cual perilla de balcón; el cuello sin gallardía, y los hombros altos; las facciones demasiadamente grandes para su estatura, de lo cual resultaba una facies nada vulgar, pero de mascarón de proa; una carofla, como le decían para hacerle rabiar, cuando era chico, sus compañeros en el Instituto de Orense. El claro entendimiento de Portal le inducía a sufrir con risueña cachaza las bromas relativas a su físico; pero el amor propio inherente a la naturaleza humana debía de hacerle sentir a veces su aguijón, y lo revelaba, sin querer, en cierto afectado desprecio hacia la belleza masculina, y en las pullas que nos soltaba a los compañeros a quienes creía mejor tratados por la naturaleza. Nunca advirtiera yo la mala gracia y prosaico exterior de Luis como un día que vino a verme, hallándome ya convaleciente de la enfermedad que atrapé a la salida del teatro Real -y que no sé si debo llamar bronco-pneumonía, bronquitis capilar, laringitis aguda, pulmonía doble, o con otro de los infinitos nombres que entretejen la complicada red de las afecciones de los órganos respiratorios-. Después de haber estado en verdadero peligro, alcanzando esas temperaturas altísimas más allá de las cuales el organismo se abrasa y aniquila, y sobreviene la muerte, de pronto se me inició franca mejoría, y ya me permitían levantarme un poco a las horas favorables, y permanecer al lado de mi mesita, reclinado en una butaca. El día en que Portal vino a acompañarme -domingo por señas- estaba el cielo encapotado, cosa rara en Madrid, y el camarada entró hasta mi cuartito metido en luengo impermeable barato, de esos que apestan a azufre desde una legua.
