Des chapitres chronologiques exposent, en debut de volume, les grands jalons de l'histoire politique et institutionnelle de la periode traitee. Ils sont suivis de sections thematiques (administration, vie quotidienne, religion, litterature, economie, etc.) soigneusement choisies en vue d'une veritable initiation du lecteur. LA REPUBLIQUE POPULAIRE DE CHINE En 1949, bien qu'elle se proclame en rupture radicale vis-a-vis des regimes qui l'ont precedee, la Republique populaire de Chine reprend a son compte les objectifs formules par les reformateurs et les revolutionnaires de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle. La difference tient aux moyens mobilises pour y parvenir. Dans les faits, la pratique du totalitarisme par Mao Zedong n'entrainera pas les transformations annoncees. Il legue une societe affaiblie et fracturee. Il faut attendre le tournant des annees 1980 pour que la promesse de modernisation soit enfin tenue. Les reformes engagent alors le pays dans des mutations plus rapides qu'aucune societe humaine n'en a jamais connues. Industrialisation, urbanisation, bureaucratisation, globalisation, migrations ne sont pourtant pas des phenomenes propres a la Chine; s'ils y prennent une proportion hors du commun, ils s'eclairent par le comparatisme. Pour conduire cette demonstration, l'ouvrage s'appuie sur les acquis les plus recents de la recherche en sciences sociales alors que l'enquete de terrain est desormais possible et les archives pour partie ouvertes.
About the Author: Contributor Biography - French Gilles Guiheux est professeur a l'Universite Paris Diderot, au departement des Langues et Civilisations de l'Asie Orientale, membre du laboratoire CESSMA. Socio-historien, il s'est interesse a la figure sociale de l'entrepreneur et du consommateur. Il conduit aujourd'hui un programme consacre aux formes du travail en Chine contemporaine. Il a notamment publie Les grands entrepreneurs prives a Taiwan, la main visible de la prosperite (2002). Damien Chaussende, whose PhD is in Chinese Studies, is a member of the Centre de Recherche sur les Civilisations de l'Asie Orientale (UMR 8155). His research deals with the history and historiography of classical China.
