José Bastida dará voz a la historia milenaria de esta villa, una narración de muchos destinos que se desarrollan en el tiempo a través de sucesivos personajes, al hilo de la incesante reencarnación de una misma trama que se prolonga a lo largo de los siglos. GTB, profesor, crítico, dramaturgo, novelista y académico de la RAE, fue tardíamente reconocido con los premios Nacional de Literatura (1981), Príncipe de Asturias (1982) y Cervantes (1985). Toda su producción narrativa se caracteriza por el conflicto entre el hombre y la realidad, una realidad determinada por el poder, el mito y el amor. Gracias a la formidable imaginación creadora de GTB, La saga/fuga de J.B es no sólo la obra cumbre de su autor, sino una de las novelas fundamentales del siglo XX, galardonada ya en 1973 con el Premio Ciudad de Barcelona y el de la Crítica. Y ésta es, por fin, la primera edición crítica de ya todo un clásico de la literatura española.
About the Author: Nació Ferrol y tendría que haber seguido la carrera militar de su padre, pero la miopía se lo impidió. Al morir su abuelo le regalaron su primer Quijote, comenzando así su andadura como lector inquieto y voraz y en 1926 se matriculo por libre en la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, donde comenzaria a leer a Friedrich Nietzsche y Oswald Spengler. Inició su actividad periodística en el diario El Carbayón. Posteriormente viajaría a Madrid, donde se instaló definitivamente en 1929. Allí frecuentaba las tertulias de Valle-Inclán, e inició sus estudios de Filosofía y Letras. Además, durante este periodo comenzó a trabajar en el periódico anarquista La Tierra, hasta su cierre en 1930, tras lo cúal volvió a Ferrol. El estallido de la Guerra Civil supuso un paréntesis en sus estudios doctorales y aconsejado por sus amigos y familiares se afilió a la Falange. Durante este periodo comienzan sus inicios literarios con Razón de ser de la dramática futura en la revista Jerarquia (1937) y varios dramas simbólicos como: El casamiento engañoso (1938), Lope de Aguirre (1941) y República Barataria (1942). Ciertos aspectos de su primera novela, Javier Mariño (1943) muestra todavía su vinculación a la falange. Posteriormente publica El golpe de Estado de Guadalupe Limón (1946), la trilogía Los gozos y las sombras (1957), Don Juan (1963) y Off-side (1969). En 1972 publicará por primera vez La saga/fuga de J.B, obra que le valdría los premios de Ciudad de Barcelona y de la Crítica. Posteriormente, convertido en un literato reconocido publica La isla de los jacintos cortados (1982), Filomeno a mi pesar (1988, Premio Planeta) y Crónica del rey pasmado (1989). De su labor como ensayista destacan Panorama de la literatura española contemporánea (1956) y El Quijote como juego (1975). En 1975 es elegido miembro de la Real Academia Española. En 1981 recibe el Premio Nacional de Literatura, un año más tarde sería galardonado con el Premio Príncipe de Asturias y con el Premio Cervantes en 1985. Entre sus últimas obras destacan La boda de Chon Recalde (1994) y Los años indecisos (1996).
