Pourquoi y-a-t-il tant de poetes qui traduisent et ont choisi avec une predilection si marquee la traduction de poesie? Personne n'a, jusqu'ici, aborde de maniere aussi directe cette realite incontestable. Rares en effet sont les poetes qui n'ont pas eu un rapport privilegie avec la traduction. Ce phenomene singulier est reperable, dans la litterature francaise aussi bien qu'europeenne, depuis la Renaissance au moins. Les exemples de poetes traducteurs sont significativement nombreux, de C. Marot a P. Jaccottet, en passant par J. Du Bellay, N. Boileau, J. Dryden, C. Baudelaire, P. Valery, G. Ungaretti, B. Pasternak, Y. Bonnefoy, P. Celan, pour ne retenir que quelques noms. La Seconde profondeur traite des liens unissant les poetes a la traduction et des motivations profondes qui les poussent a traduire d'autres alter ego en poesie. Ce rapport subtil, ce voyage qui amene un poete a se glisser dans l'univers d'un autre en refaisant, par la traduction, son parcours d'ecriture, est particulierement revelateur d'une fraternite essentielle, d'une consubstantialite par-dela les langues et les siecles. En abordant le sujet des interactions sous-jacentes entre ecriture et traduction poetiques, cet essai tente de cerner la place des poetes traducteurs dans l'horizon litteraire moderne et contemporain, et de faire face a une enigme qui fait entrer le lecteur au coeur meme de la creation esthetique. Il redefinit la specificite des poetes-traducteurs dans l'Europe du XXe siecle a partir de la pratique de poetes traducteurs aussi bien francais (P. Jaccottet, Y. Bonnefoy, A. Guerne, A. Robin, entre autres) qu'etrangers (R. M. Rilke, S. Beckett, B. Pasternak, M. Tsvetaeva), dans une perspective a la fois descriptive et critique. Il s'interroge sur la preeminence des poetes dans le milieu de la traduction poetique, ainsi que sur l'importante marge de manoeuvre dont ils semblent disposer en toute conscience, et souvent avec l'accord tacite du public. Valeur ajoutee ou exception scandaleuse? Voila l'une des questions qui sera au coeur de cette reflexion. Eu egard au grand nombre de poetes traducteurs qui ont illustre l'art de la traduction poetique en France et en Europe au XXe siecle, une anthologie des propos de praticiens de la poesie et de la traduction vient en point d'orgue a une demarche qui conduit a comprendre que l'acte meme de traduire est un des moteurs (pour ne pas dire l'aliment essentiel) de leur ecriture poetique.
