C'est le matin: Naples s'éveille sous les premiers baisers du soleil. Mille cris se heurtent et se croisent déjà, les gestes le disputant en vivacité aux paroles. Nus comme la main, des bambins se roulent sur les dalles, rongeant un fruit, s'arrachant un jouet, courant après le sou du passant généreux ou du forestiere charmé de leur bonne mine. Sales, la figure barbouillée et les cheveux en broussailles, ils ont les chairs merveilleuses, le ton et la forme des enfants peints par Raphaël. À quelques pas, leurs mères et leurs soeurs, assises auprès d'un panier de fruits ou surveillant un fourneau allumé pour cuire le macaroni, se coiffent en plein air, faisant gravement la chasse à un insecte importun, lissant leurs cheveux et n'interrompant la natte commencée que pour crier leur marchandise, invectiver une voisine ou administrer une taloche à un marmot récalcitrant. Sur toute la longueur du quai, adossées au parapet qui borde le golfe, du Fort de l'Oeuf au Palais du Roi, se dressent les légères boutiques à claire-voie où l'on débite les fiori et les frutti di mare, coquillages, poissons, mollusques encore vivants, qui grouillent pêle-mêle dans les baquets pleins d'eau de mer.
About the Author: Gustave Toudouze (né le 19 mai 1847 à Paris, mort le 2 juillet 1904 dans la même ville), est un romancier, auteur dramatique et journaliste français. Il est le père de l'écrivain Georges-Gustave Toudouze. Gustave Toudouze est le fils aîné de l'architecte et graveur Gabriel Toudouze, auteur d'une série d'eaux-fortes et d'une belle oeuvre dessinée, conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale. Sa mère, Anaïs Colin, artiste peintre, était la fille d'Alexandre Colin, élève de Girodet-Trioson et descendant de Simon Challe, le statuaire du XVIIIe siècle. Après des études au collège Sainte-Barbe de 1855 à 1869, il devint un familier des dimanches de Gustave Flaubert, qui encouragea ses débuts, puis du grenier d'Edmond de Goncourt, il fut lié avec Émile Zola, Alphonse Daudet, Alexandre Dumas fils et surtout Guy de Maupassant qui lui dédiera la nouvelle En voyage en 1883. Pendant la Belle Époque, l'été, Gustave Toudouze fréquente la colonie artistique de Camaret-sur-Mer en Bretagne.
